The Allman Brothers Band played at Mercer University on this dare, February 27, back in 1970. That’s thirty-eight years ago for those of you keeping score at home.
One of my deepest regrets is that I never got to see Duane Allman play live. I have spoken to so many friends and musicians who saw him play or worked with him on various levels. The consensus is that he was a mystic, a shaman, a channel, an amazing talent and a hell of a fun guy to hang with. Sadly, I will never know for myself. Happily, I have been blessed to meet and talk with so many great people who knew Duane, which is a very special thing to me.
As I type this blog, it is 9:30 pm on February 27th. According to records, The Brothers started their show at 7 pm, and by now they were likely just getting warmed up, perhaps knee deep in “Elizabeth Reed” or “Whipping Post.” What a show that must have been.
Here are a couple of cool shots I found on the web that were shot at Mercer on this date in 1970. The Brothers hittin’ the note. Must have been one hell of a show.
Keep it Real. Keep it Southern.

I love the ABB!!! I saw them at The Fillmore many many many moons ago. They played until dawn. I danced all night on orange sunshine. I will never forget it.
