William Eggleston: The Father of Color Photography

The Photography of William Eggleston
10/4/07

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1939, William Eggleston stands as the south's greatest photographer. He's been called the "Father of Color Photography" by accomplished artists. His indelible pictures elevate ordinary objects into colossal moments or subject matter...

Eggleston's books William Eggleston's Guide, The Democratic Forest, Faulkner's Mississippi and Ancient and Modern prove as timeless works in American art. Stanley Booth wrote about his old friend, "When I first knew Eggleston, one occasionally heard the word 'dilettante' used to describe him, simply because one man isn't supposed to know about music, firearms, sound systems, television set construction and art."

Eggleston's photos appear on albums by Big Star, Primal Scream and Chuck Prophet, while also appearing in books by Stanley Booth and Ali Smith. To view some of Eggleston's work, click here.
