Jim Dickinson On The Line

Mystery & Manners Interview With Memphis Legend Jim Dickinson
2/9/08

"She shivers just like jelly in the bowl."
               --Jim Dickinson

On this bright and windy Atlanta morning I called Jim Dickinson at his Zebra Ranch Studio. Jim Dickinson, the father of North Mississippi Allstars Cody & Luther, worked with--in one capacity or another--luminaries such as Furry Lewis, Duane Allman, Johnny Cash, Sam Phillips, Mavis Staples, Bettye LaVette, Eddie Hinton, Aretha Franklin, Big Star, Albert King, Phineas Newborn, Doug Sahm, Bob Dylan, The Dixie Flyers, Jerry Wexler, Jerry Jeff Walker, Tom Dowd, Daniel Lanois, Ry Cooder, Ronnie Hawkins, Sam the Sham, Albert Collins, James Carr, Charlie Freeman, Lee Baker, Tommy McClure, The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Carmen McRae and a long list of others.

Dickinson is a fascinating character and this interview proves his charismatic mojo still exists. Among many topics, we discussed his early days, Sun Records, Bob Dylan, Stanley Booth, Eddie Hinton, movie soundtracks, Chips Moman, Muscle Shoals, The Rolling Stones, his son Luther joining The Black Crowes, Hill Country music and a few exciting projects on the horizon.

I'll get this interview up once I complete my interview with Widespread Panic drummer Todd Nance two days ago. Onward...
