Silver Travis Set to Release Second Album

Posted: Nov 14, 2008

I am really stoked about the upcoming sophomore release by the Silver Travis Band. I have been listening to all the various takes for well over a year, and it has shaped up to be one fantastic record. The old boys from Spartanburg, SC even managed to bring two original members of  Marshall Tucker to the party in the form of drummer Paul T. Riddle and horn man Jerry Eubanks.  The album was recorded at Mill Street Studios in Spartanburg County and produced and engineered by yet two more former Tuckers, Tim Lawter and Rusty Milner.

It looks as though my old home town is about to single handedly bring about the return of the classic Southern Rock sound, with both Jackson Crossing and The Southern Boys Band (featuring Justin McCorkle, George McCorkle) son of Marshall Tucker guitarist getting set to release CDs, both produced by legendary Capricorn producer Paul Hornsby. And then there is Silver Travis. Just wait ‘til you get a load of this. Wow!

Back on the early 1980’s, I worked with Silver Travis as sound and light man and songwriter. At the time the boys were fresh out of high school. Now, some 26 years later, they are rocking the big leagues. I couldn't be more proud of my old buddies. Fact is, they have always been top of the line. Rick Cash has always been one of my favorite singers, and Randall Calvert never ceases to amaze me with his pyrotechnic guitar wizardry.

A couple of years ago the band released their first album ever, One Monkey Don’t Spoil The Show, on the heals of an exciting reunion, and after adding the super talented John Gillie and Terry Collins to the lineup. Now they have recorded what I would call a minor masterpiece, Take The High Road. You’ll be hearing a lot about these boys, make my words.

As we move toward release time, I plan to share a few great memories of my days with Silver Travis, including our run at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach; hustling with Steve Harvey to write enough original songs to perform at the Buck a Cup gala at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium; and hanging out and recording at (Marshall Tucker’s) Creative Arts Studio. It’ll be fun. Meanwhile, check out the boy’s website for samples from the new album.

Keep it Real. Keep it Southern.

Hi Buff we played under the name of Wet Stone or Cellar Wall. But the Rat Skeller was two Blocks from the Bowery Directly across from the gay dolphine and down stairs. The Little House was right beside it. Our Guitar player played a triple stack 200 watt Marsall stack and I had a double base Black Rogers set. I use to set my cymbal on fire during the last set. take back in time our last song was summertime blues by Blue Cheer.

Thanks fellas... I heard the completed Silver Travis master over at Joey Parrish's house today, and it is amazing, a little Tucker influence, a little ABB and Eagles maybe, but 100 percent original. Copper.... I went to the beach about six times during the 70s, and then with Silver Travis for the Bowery run in 82.... We always laughed at the Gay Dolphin (boys being boys)... But I bought mt first Tucker Band tshirt there, baby blue with the name and the cowboy on a horse sawing a fiddle. Good times for sure. The only real bar I ever went to was the Bowery I think. What was the name of your band?
