A Sunday Service On Southern Culture
7/20/08

“The artist penetrates the concrete world in order
to find at its depths the image if its source, the image of ultimate reality.”
--Flannery O’Connor
A few notes on this Sunday morning…
Now that the coastal run has concluded, it’s time for the next batch of stories. This recent Charlie Daniels interview sheds light when Daniels recorded with Bob Dylan almost 40 years ago. A new Neil Young news item illuminates Young’s new movie with CSNY as well as his fascination with cars and technology. CSNY’s film, Déjà vu opens here in Atlanta on July 25.
This morning I’m transcribing my interview with The Black Crowes’ new keyboardist Adam MacDougall. There are no shortages of interviews in the near future. Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples and Jimmie Vaughan headline the Green River Festival, which verifies southern artists often carry the greatest weight at any music festival.
As we gradually phase out of summertime—in the midst of a Presidential Election year…a sick economy…and an eerie Chinese Olympics…I’m looking forward to injecting some SEC football stories into the mix. Author Paul Hemphill will make an appearance for his insight on southern college football after writing about the game for over 50 years. There are more guest appearances on the way…
The idea is to reveal the cultural value to all these seemingly esoteric stories, artists and news items. To demonstrate how the fabric of southern culture influences the rest of the country and the world. Who could argue America’s greatest contribution to the arts world is its music? Or literature? Even food? Here at Mystery And Manners we’ll even cover a little more of the environment…say like an upcoming book review of Allman Brothers/Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell’s Forever Green: The History and Hope of the American Forest. Look for a few stories on southern agriculture, architecture, actors and photography. We’ll broaden the scope a little more in our ongoing journey into the heart of southern culture…
