A Conversation with Southern Scribe Stanley Booth
9/27/08

When things get weird, I always call my old friend Stanley Booth. Booth ranks as one of the most influential southern music writers in the last 70 years. He sent me the link to his homage to his old friend Jerry Wexler published in Newsweek. Stanley also told me he would be flying to New York in a couple of days to go on the record for a Rolling Stones documentary. He will also return to New York in November to honor his old friend, the great photographer William Eggleston.
Stanley and his poet wife Diann Blakely will be attending a writer's conference in Macon, Georgia, next week where he will speak. Stanley is also preparing several books for possible publication, and Lord knows he's got plenty of material. Stanley has always served as a great soundboard for me. If I wanted to get an honest opinion on something I wrote, I always send it to him to see if there's anything wrong with the piece. His experiences outweigh almost every so-called music writer out there.
Stanley and Diann have had health issues as of late, and I'd like to say in print I hope they will continue to mend. I love them both. Stanley gave me some sound advice on a couple of dilemmas I'm facing. I feel lucky to have such talented and insightful friends. I'll keep you posted on all developments.
Now, I'll get back to this Georgia versus Alabama game.

Great to get the link to the piece Booth did on Wexler in Newsweek. Are you going to the writer's conference in Macon? Hope you have worked your way out of your dilemma(s). Good luck. :-)
