I was talking to my old friend Ricky Godfrey on the telephone yesterday. Rick is living in Nashville, but he still returns home to Greenville, SC very often to play gigs. Rick was telling me that after many years as a succesful beach music guitarist and singer, he is chompin’ at the bit to return to his first love - Southern rock and roll.
After all, there was a time when Rick and his band Garfeel Ruff were poised to carry on the Spartanburg, SC radition started by The Marshall Tucker Band. They had secured a recording contract with none other than Capitol Records, and were creating quite a buzz for themselves.
When I last interviewed Godfrey back in 2002, he was knee deep in the beach music community. Now, it seems Rick is ready to retire his Shaggin’ shoes to return to his Southern Rock and blues roots.
It seems like the perfect time to post the following Garfeel Ruff story that I wrote back in 1996. Click here to read the article.
You can find their old music on eBay and other internet sites. Check 'em out and keep an eye out for Ricky Godfrey's Southern Rock comeback. We'll keep you up to date on his career right here on the website.
Keep it Real. Keep it Southern.
