I was going through my files today and ran across an article I wrote back in 1999 about Toy Caldwell. Parts of the article were published in Hittin The Note magazine as well as in Goldmine magazine.
It's no secret that Toy Caldwell was one of my all-time favorite musicians. He was unique, playing guitar with his thumb instead of a pick and just blazing across the fret board. As a songwriter, Toy was the most down to earth writer I have ever known, writing songs about love and life, family, horses, the road, and walking his property line.
I had the good fortune of meeting him and spending a little quality time with him on several occasions, laughing at his wit until my sides hurt, and listening to him play and sing his great songs. If I ever had a true hero, Toy was one.
I have added the full length article to the Swampland archives. I hope you will check it out and let me know what you think.
Keep it Real. Keep it Southern.
