Autumnal Traditions and Emotional Rescue in Tuscaloosa

Autumnal Traditions and Emotional Rescue in Tuscaloosa
9/23/07

As Georgia's kicker lined up to miss the kick, sending the Georgia-Alabama game into overtime, I thought of all the fans I knew watching this game...and all the folks I've watched games with over the last 30 years. Southerners take their college football seriously, especially old alumni. This game proved an emotional rescue for the DAWGS, a 26-23 overtime victory, but only until the next game because every team in the SEC proves formidable. Pro football hinges on speed and money while college football revolves on speed and emotion. Even a Philadelphia Eagles fan understands emotion...

Fall always brings autumnal traditions like football, live music and woodsmoke drifting above some obscure barbecue den on overcast days. On this second day of fall (a cool 84 in Atlanta), I hammer on the new Paul Hemphill article as well as a few other fresh perspectives on Stanley Booth, Diann Blakely, Harry Crews, Jim Dickinson, The Black Crowes, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson, Lightning Hopkins, Phil Walden, Sonny Boy Williamson, Merle Haggard, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm, Bloodkin, The Drive By Truckers, Steve Earle, David Barbe, Ryan Bingham, Marc Ford, Thomas Brothers and a slew of other artists...just for Mystery And Manners. Check out the new Coltrane book review; and a new Carla Thomas review. Many plates spin at Swampland as we enter into a new phase...more daily items and more sensory material. Check back every day for features, conversations, news, CD, book and food reviews.

Of course, in these mysterious times, you never know what latest development or unforseen event appears around the corner as some signpost in time that requires coverage. It might be a good time to stop by the Swampland's Southern Pro Football Department for latest Sunday gridiron news or GRITZ for the latest round of Buffalo's news.

Until tomorrow...
