Snowflakes: Big 12 Hoops

* What a great game Monday night between Texas and Kansas. In my opinion, it was ‘highest quality’ contest I have seen all year. While some other games had crazier finishes, KU-Texas looked like a Final 4 matchup with two heavyweights slugging it out. Although the Longhorns took the victory at home, I still believe the Jayhawks are the best team in the Nation. They have a combination of scorers, veterans, passing game, and defense that no one in the country can match. I would love to see these two teams go at it again in the Big 12 Tournament. With talent like D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams for Texas as well as Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur for Kansas, another battle between the ‘Hawks and ‘Horns would be great for the game of basketball.

* After starting the season 15-1, Texas A&M lost three in a row in late January, and we had to wonder how first year Aggies coach Mark Turgeon and his team would react. Well, after dropping that epic 5-overtime game to Baylor, A&M has reeled off five straight wins and is ranked in the Top 20 once again. The current hot streak has been fueled by their suffocating defense and rebounding, and the Aggies will be a team that others do not want to play in the postseason. With a 20-4 record, the comforting thing for the Texas A&M fan base is that there appears to be no drop off in the transition from Billy Gillispie to Turgeon.

* Kudos to Pat Knight for getting his first victory Wednesday night in the 84-75 upset of #22 ranked Kansas State. Texas Tech jumped out to a 20-point lead early in the second half, and everything looked to be going the Red Raiders’ way. However, when the talented Wildcats cut the deficit to five points with three minutes to go, you know the rookie coach Knight had to be sweating his team getting the big win. Tech made their free throws down the stretch, and the celebration began in Lubbock. It will be very interesting to see what the Texas Tech brass chooses to do in the offseason. Attendance has been lagging this season, and we will have to wait and see how much loyalty they have to the younger Knight. Stay tuned.
