Street Survivors - Deluxe Edition
30th Anniversary

(Geffen/UMe)

Mere days after the release of Street Survivors in 1977, the Freebird fell to the ground, silencing one of Southern Rock’s finest voices in Ronnie Van Zant. Every hard core Southern Rocker remembers where they were when we got the news. We will never forget the saddness. We’ll never forget the recall of the infamous “flame cover” of Street Survivors following the airplane crash, replaced with the band against a stark black background.

Street Survivors was always one of my very favorite records. I was blown away by the back and forth vocal between Ronnie and Steve Gaines on “You Got Ghat Right.” It’s a song I never tire of. And then there’s the truly timeless “That Smell” and “What’s Your Name.”

Ronnie Van Zant considered Street Survivors Lynyrd Skynyrd’s greatest achievement. Perhaps it was. The album was recorded not once, but twice. The first version was recorded at Miami's Criteria Studios in winter 1976 and spring 1977 with the great Tom Dowd producing. But, dissatisfied with the results, Skynyrd returned that summer to Studio One in Atlanta, and produced the released version themselves.

Now, on the two-CD Street Survivors - Deluxe Edition, the previously unreleased first version stands tall alongside the final studio album from the original Lynyrd Skynyrd.

There is a wealth of bonus music here, including an eight minute version of “That Smell” featuring a major guitar jam reminicent of “Free Bird.”

The reissue also features the never-before-issued last known recordings of the band, five songs performed live at a Fresno, California, concert less than two months before the group's tragic  crash.

This is a must have for all Skynyrd fans. A classic. A true treasure. Sure got that right!
