Jimmy Hall is one of the finest singers working today. I don’t say that just because he is the Southern fried lead vocalist of Wet Willie, or because he has recorded with everyone from Bonnie Bramlett to Jeff Beck. I say it because it is the truth, which is why there could not have been a better choice to sing a collection of tunes written by an equally legendary singer and songwriter, Eddie Hinton.
Backed by a group of musicians calling themselves The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Collective, Hall romps through 13 great Hinton songs, and leaves you wanting more. The band features a few names you may have heard of: Clayton Ivey on keys; Larry Byrom on guitar; Greg Martin on guitar; Jonathan Dees on drums; and David Hood on bass; along with guests Delbert McClinton, Kira Small; and Bruce Dees.
Hall takes it up to “eleven” with Hinton tunes such as “Poor Old Me,” “Salty” (featured here in two mixes), “Cover Me,” and “I Found a True Love.” Also included is an interview with David Hood about Eddie Hinton, which is priceless.
An outstanding recording, a fine tribute to Eddie with stellar performances by all.
