An Afternoon with Old Friends
7/18/08
Yesterday afternoon I visited the married writers Stanley Booth and Diann Blakely. It was good to see them. Diann and I made a couple changes to her Mystery And Manners article about Hunter S. Thompson. Stanley got word that his Johnny Mercer article will be published in an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair--so keep an eye out for that in a month or two. Stanley already wrote a book about Savannah songwriter Mercer that may yet see the light of day.
Stanley showed me his story about his friend William Eggleston and photo galley for the catalogue regarding the William Eggleston Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York scheduled for November. Stanley and I made a barbecue run to an old favorite establishment that I will include in The Never Ending Soul Food Tour soon. Stanley and Diann have been very ill these past few months, and I'm very concerned about them both.
Earlier in the week we kept time with Michael Gowen and his family, which always proves soulful fun. I later even ran into an old flame that evoked fond scents of the past. Last night Southern Soul Barbecue master Griffin Bufkin and I hung out in a couple of old haunts, where we ran into more than a couple friendly faces. Griffin will be submitting distinctive cultural barbecue recipes representing different styles in our continual pursuit of the craft. Look for that soon also.
Many new things are on the horizon here at Mystery And Manners...I'll be shuffling things up a bit. Also, be sure to check out Buffalo's new radio hour. Come back tomorrow...

It's me again. LOVED Diann's piece on Hunter S. Thompson and your piece from 2000 on Stanley. Had never read it since I did not join Swampland until 2001. Glad you linked to it. Thanks, Penne

I have never had the pleasure of meeting William Eggleston, but I am a huge fan of his work. I can hear the Whitney calling me this November. So excited to hear that Stanley Booth will have a piece about Mercer in Vanity Fair. Hope both Diann and Stanley will be completely well soon. Meanwhile, kudos to you for all you do.:-)
