Monday I spent the afternoon with the great keyboard wizard Ike Stubblefield at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta. Ike stands as perhaps the most talented and versatile keyboardist in the city. His musical avenues pursue jazz, blues, Motown, funk and rock; just about anything a song needs, Ike will provide it. Ike has played with The Temptations, Eric Clapton, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner, Jerry Garcia, the Pointer Sisters, Rod Stewart, Derek Trucks, Col. Bruce Hampton and Susan Tedeschi to name a few. Ike's also worked with Traffic's Jim Capaldi, Phil Spector and Quincy Jones. As a musician, Ike has lived in San Francisco, Toledo, London, Vancouver, Detroit, Seattle, Portland and now in Atlanta.
Tree Sound Studios is one of the nicest studios I’ve ever visited. It’s an impressive complex. Artists such as Outkast, R.E.M., Goodie Mob, Beastie Boys, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Collective Soul, Shawn Mullins and Fergie along with many other platinum albums lining the studio walls spent hours cultivating sounds within these confines. Ike introduced me to Tree Sounds owner Paul Diaz. I interviewed Paul and he told me his story. Aside from the musical mojo the studios contain, Paul told me the story of how Tree Sound supports Earth-Friendly Marketing. The CD packaging along with contributing 4% of their income to environmental charities that foster responsible consumer awareness is only a small part of what the studio is involved in. The studio operates on solar energy. The Tree Sound grounds also contain an organic vegetable and herb garden. Paul Diaz operates ahead of the curve and it’s obvious from his words, insight, accomplishments and upcoming projects he’s not fooling around.
Tree Sound Studios is a great story and I’ll soon get the Paul Diaz interview up. I look forward to keeping all updates on Tree Sound in Swampland/Mystery And Manners’ rotation. I’ll have to take a little more time on the Ike Stubblefield story over the holidays because he’s such a heavy cat it’s difficult to get his story down in a few days. And we still really haven’t conducted our definitive interview yet which should take place in the first week of so of January. Talk about a man with some stories…Ike Stubblefield ranks as a supreme professional and journeyman musician. Ike’s played on about 18 CDs in the last 14 months.
