John Rich and Gone Country, a Great Way to Chill On a Saturday Night

It turned out to be a CMT kind of night at the Buffalo home last night. First, i watched the premier of season three of Gone Country, followed by CMT Cribs, which took us on a visit to the home of our friend Charlie Daniels. Yes, My Big Redneck Wedding was on for thirty minutes in between those two shows, but I am not a fan of Tom Arnold nor that show, so I simply checked e-mail and made myself a cup of coffee.

I really enjoy John Rich’s Gone Country. It’s fun. I mean, don’t think for a minute that I am dumb enough to believe that everything happening on there is real and not staged. Hey, I’m a wrestling fan too, and while I am not big on these so called reality shows, I do enjoy Gene Simmons Family Jewels and Gone Country. Yep.

This season’s cast may be the most eclectic yet. There is some honest to God music talent in the room, for sure. George Clinton, the lead dog of Parliament Funkadelic, the Willie Nelson of funk, is in the running, rainbow hair and all. The notorious Miss USA 2006 Tara Conner, who has never heard of any of her fellow contestants, joins pop chart toppers Taylor Dayne and Sheila E., along with The Monkees’ drummer/singer Micky Dolenz. Richard Grieco, the actor who co-stared with Johnny Depp years ago on 21 Jump Street and second place season one American idol guy Justin Guarini round out the eclectic ensemble.

Of course, the true star of the show is “Mr. Nashville,” John Rich (Big & Rich), and after everyone meets one another, Rich shuttles them off to a downtown club to perform for a country audience. It’s already easy to separate the men from the boys -so to speak - with Micky Dolenz turning in a borderline country acoustic version of “Last Train To Clarksville,” and Sheila E. burning up one of her Top Ten hits on the drums and percussion. Taylor Dayne did well too, as did Justin, although I still have nightmares about that movie he did with Kelly Clarkson.

The obvious weak links are Grieco (although he is a recording artist with a following in Europe) and Clinton, who lead the ensemble in a toned down version of “We Want The Funk.” It’s quite obvious that Clinton’s voice is shot, and he seems to be the most obvious “fish out of water.” Should be at least interesting to see what happens. As for Miss USA Tara, she has absolutely zero experience performing, and it showed big time. Painfully, I might add.

It was a delight to see the legendary Geoirge Jones singing for the cast at The Country Music Hall of Fame. I just had to imagine ol’ Possum working with Mr. P-Funk on an album. Maybe call it A Couple of Georges.

I’ll keep watching.

Like I said, I skipped the Redneck Wedding show, and only watched the first segment of CMT Cribs, which featured our pal Charlie Daniels and his wife Hazel out at their Twin Pines Ranch, which features a nice log home with three bedrooms and two baths, along with a library chock full of books. We also got to see his private golf driving range and his horses - at least a few of them. It was pretty neat.
