The Allman Brothers Band at The Beacon, March 19, 2009
Posted: Mar 19, 2009The rumors were raging again. Lots of talk about Eric Clapton. Lots of anticipation. No doubt.
The curtain came up, the Duane Allman slide show paid tribute to Skydog while Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes played a soulful “Little Martha.” A couple of minutes of darkness gave everyone time to remember Duane, then Gregg Allman counted off “Statesborro Blues,” with Warren coming out of the chute kicking on slide on that Les Paul of his. Gregg sounded particularly “on” vocally right off the bat, and was really tickling those ivories during his piano run. Derek took second lead, again opting to play his Les Paul rather than his signature SG.
The Brothers added a really nice instrumental jam leading into a slide-soaked “Done Somebody Wrong.” Smokin.’ Then came the “feel good” hit of the spring, one of my favorites, “Revival.” Never get tired of that one. The night was really beginning to heat up. I looked over at Gregg and he was toweling his face off like Louis Armstrong on a Saturday night gig in NuAwlins.
Warren greeted the audience, then lead the band into a dynamic version of “Woman Across The River.” That red Gibson 335 was blazin.’ Warren and Derek got into a call and response that just blew the roof off of that sucka. Derek broke a string but just kept burning away on five strings. My God. Amazing jam.
Gregg was up to bat next and knocked it out of the park with “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin.’” You know Allman is feeling it when he sings a line and goes “Yes suh!” He was on base and heading toward home plate, and after some particularly sick guitars from Derek and Warren, he brought the thing home.
The crowd lit up like a 100 watt bulb when OTeil started the opening bass licks for everyone’s favorite, “Whipping Post.” I can’t really put into words what happened next. I know I wasn’t doing acid, I haven’t done that since the seventies. It just kind of felt like it. I was tripping on John Coltrane mixed with Robert Johnson mixed with Syd Barrett. I checked my Evian bottle. Did my wife dose me while I wasn’t looking? Nope. Not possible. But the liquid light show and the amazing jam sent me to that nether-world that Dr. Hunter S. Thompson used to visit on occasion, and I liked it. Absolut Allman. Best version of the song so far this run. And then it was time for a break. No guest stars first set, but I barely noticed. The first “all Allmans” set of this Beacon run, and a hot one.
The surprises kept coming as Gregg opened the second set solo on piano with a super soul version of his “Oncoming Traffic.” I kept hoping Bonnie Bramlett would step back onstage again to duet. But hey, Gregory wrote the song, and boy did he sing it from the heart. Just beautiful.
Next it was back to ‘73 and the Brothers and Sisters LP with the very excellent “Come and Go Blues.” I love that song. But. Wait a minute. Was that a Stratocaster I saw sitting on a guitar stand onstage? Hmmm. Wonder who is famous for playing a Strat?
Next came Gov’t Mule’s Danny Louis stepping up to the keyboard beside Gregg for their “Spoonful” rendition of “Good Morning Little School Girl.” Most excellent keys from Danny, and Warren was playing da blues like Buddy Guy on steroids.
At this point, Gregg says, “Our next guest needs no introduction.” And brought on Eric Clapton for a rocking blues “Key To The Highway,” with Clapton trading off vocals with Gregg, and the two of them smiling at one another like the old friends they are. Warren smoked a solo, as did Derek, then Gregg on the Hammond and then E.C. on the Strat. Wow.
“Dreams” came next, as Clapton put his unique stamp all over it. Amazing solos by all three pickers. A sheer joy. Then it was more Derek & The Dominos action as Clapton kicked off “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad.” Can I get an amen? The break down and guitar artistry were impeccable. The only way it could have been better is if Bobby Whitlock had been there to add those trademark harmonies and piano. Guess we can't have it all, eh? Still, you will get zero complaints from me on tonight’s show.
I have always said that Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is my favorite album, kind of tied with Fillmore East. So when they took off on the Dominos version of “Little Wing” I transcended space and time, and recalled every happy memory from the early seventies. So beautiful. So very beautiful.
And it just kept on coming, as the incredible Susan Tedesci joined in on another Layla tune, “Anyday, Anyway.” That Susan just kills me with that angel voice of hers. A perfect addition to the song. All I kept thinking was, if Eric does indeed return tomorrow, they could end up playing the entire Layla album. My dream realized.
Speaking of... the band returned with E.C. for the encore, and yes, it was “Layla,” full tilt boogie. Derek Trucks was adding all sorts of Duane-like licks, and Danny Louis just aced the piano coda. I kept hoping Chuck Leavell might be there to play it, but I tell ya, Danny did a fine job. Extra fine, actually.
Tonight’s show may have just stolen the crown as the best show of the run thus far. Seriously. It was amazing from the get go, and with “Slowhand” joining in, it couldn’t miss.
Well, it’s time to rest up for round two Friday night. Dang. What’s next, Phyllis Diller Chili?*
