Prayers & Light For Southern Writer Paul Hemphill

I cannot explain the difficulty or pain it causes me to write these next lines... My friend and hero Paul Hemphill has fallen ill again. Last year Hemp beat lung cancer. He’d been doing better. However, as of late, it’s become difficult to get in touch with him and I became worried. Turns out, the cancer has spread to his lungs. He got an infection and was rushed to the hospital. He’s now in hospice care.

I called and emailed his wife Susan expressing my concern, pain and sadness. This morning at 7:27 Susan sent me this email: “James, thanks so much for your good thoughts and wishes. And for the phone messages you left. Paul is in a hospice facility near where we live; glad to be out of the hospital. His children are all here, and other family members are coming in the next few days.”

I’d like everyone to investigate the work of Mr. Paul Hemphill—he’s a true southern artist. Your humble correspondent is in the dark lane. We share the same birthday, I'd been a fan for over 20 years, admired his spirit and he's always said flattering things to me about my work. Hemp doesn't give out compliments too easily.
