Big 12 Daily Fever: The Big 12 Makes Comparisons to the SEC - Should They?

Posted: Aug 24, 2009

Big 12 Daily Fever is the top Big 12 story of the day. Disagree? Let us know.

The Big 12 conference was well represented in the initial AP Top 25 Poll with five teams making the cut.  College football fans nationwide have the Texas/Oklahoma game circled on the calendar.  Oklahoma State may add to the excitement with an early season win against Georgia.

These are the things that have Big 12 fans and media comparing their league to the currently dominant SEC, who had five of the top 13 in preseason ranking.  The problem for the Big 12 comes back to a question Swampland Sports has raised again and again - divisional balance.

While we know about the power of the South Division, the key to the league’s strength will be a national contender emerging from the North Division. Nebraska and Kansas are the favorites in the North, and they were ranked 24th and 25th in the opening poll.

To get to the level of the SEC, the North Division must pull its weight and help the conference get away from the Big 2 (Oklahoma and Texas) perception.  Otherwise, it will have us again wondering why Texas and Oklahoma aren't in separate divisions following the wisdom of the ACC, which put Miami and FSU in different divisions after they expanded to 12 teams.  If they were, last season's controversy over Texas vs Oklahoma could have been addressed on the field rather than by the polls.

Kansas basketball and geography aside, the Big 12's imbalance of power must be addressed.  Otherwise, the fundamentals of the Big 12 as a power football conference remain flawed.
