SEC Daily Fever: Embattled Dawgs D Gets Opening Challenge

While much of the talk in Athens has been about replacing Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, the key to the 2009 Georgia season may lie in the improvement of the Dawgs defense.

Coordinator Willie Martinez was public enemy #1 a year ago as the Bulldogs were throttled for over 40 points in rivalry losses to Georgia Tech, Florida and Alabama.

It will not get any easier this season as Georgia opens in Stillwater against the high-octane attack of Oklahoma State. While quarterback Joe Cox gets used to starting and the team looks for a consistent runner, Martinez must have his talented group playing better than the unit that finished 59th in the country in scoring defense last season.

The Georgia schedule is definitely one of the toughest in the country, but that’s how it goes in the SEC. The Dawgs defense will have a chance to set the tone for a successful 2009 campaign with a solid performance in the much-anticipated season opener.

Although the Alabama-Virginia Tech game in Atlanta may be seen as the best early inter-Swampland challenge, Georgia's trip to Stillwater has to come in a close second.  Georgia and OSU seem to be at similar tiers within their respective conferences.

The winner will determine early season bragging rights between the SEC and the Big 12, bragging rights that took the BCS Championship to decide last season.
