Big 12 Daily Fever: Can Mizzou Show That The Big 12 North Isn't Just The Big Ten?

A very meaningful game for the Big 12 North will happen Saturday when Missouri meets Illinois in the opener.

This matchup is a great regional rivalry played in St. Louis, and the Tigers have won the last four.  This year’s version will be a huge litmus test for the Tigers as Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin are now in the NFL.

Gary Pinkel’s team will have highly-recruited Blaine Gabbert as the new quarterback, but he will rely heavily on veteran tailback Derrick Washington and a hopefully improved defense to lead the squad early. 

Another win against the Illini could set the tone for the Mizzou program as a whole, as well as the ’09 team.

We've been focusing on this for a while, but the Big 12 North reminds us and many of the Big 10, a beleagured conference of late.  On the other hand, the Big 12 South believes it can go toe to toe with the SEC.  (The OSU Cowboys will be making that case on the field Saturday against Georgia.)

Missouri must keep winning this rivalry game for the Big 12 to challenge the SEC's supremacy.  If the Big 12 North's most consistent team over the last few years can't beat a mid-tier Big 10 team on a neutral field, the Big 12 as a whole may be plagued by the same problems it has had since it expanded - divisional balance.
