Sam Carr, the last of the great Delta drummers, died Monday.
Carr’s drumming made him a sought after musician among blues greats. Carr often used his wallet or keys on his drums for a specific sound.
Carr’s father was blues legend Robert Nighthawk, but Sam was adopted by the Carr family as a young child. Carr played with blues greats like Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Jack Johnson and even recorded for Sam Phillips in Memphis.
Later Carr also recorded for Fat Possum Records and made a guest appearance on Buddy Guy’s Sweet Tea album. Sam Carr died after a long illness. Another blues great gone…RIP.
