Big 12 Daily Fever: Texas Wants A Red River Win To Lift Their Season

Posted: Oct 14, 2009

Maybe it’s just gamesmanship before a huge rivalry battle, but the Texas Longhorns say they are glad to see Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford back on the field and ready to go Saturday in Dallas.

While the Sooners probably appreciate the nice sentiment, the real reason for the Horns’ words is summed up in the Mack Brown quote:

"You really want to play people when they’re at their best, because that’s the only way you get credit for beating them”

Precisely, Coach.

Texas learned last season about the pain of waiting on BCS results, and they want a potential Oklahoma victory to count as much as possible with the national media. In a year where the Longhorns scheduled no big time out-of-conference opponents, they cannot afford for Big 12 wins to be perceived as easily expected.

As opposed to last year when the Big 12 was the big story in college football, Oklahoma's early losses and Oklahoma State's stumble against Houston as a top 5 team have not helped the conference's perception.  That's a problem because college football is a perception game.

Texas was already passed by Alabama in this week’s AP poll, and they do not want to see the same thing happen later this year if they have one loss along the way.
