SEC Daily Fever: League Refs Under Scrutiny After Missed Calls

It seems to happen every week- fans gripe about the refs. While part of that is just fans being fans, this season has seen an especially high number of questionable calls around the SEC.

The celebration penalties in the Georgia-LSU game drew a lot of criticism, and then the two 15-yard calls against Arkansas during Florida’s comeback this weekend have fans and media questioning the league’s officiating competency.

It turns out that the same crew called both games, and even Florida columnists were admitting to the Gators’ good fortune. The SEC office had to come out yesterday and actually admit fault on the controversial plays. Fans hope it is just a case on one bad crew making mistakes but with so much on the line in each game, frustration is at an all-time high.

In some ways, the SEC is lucky because Alabama and Florida are seen as the clear top two teams.  There seems to be little chance that Florida and Alabama won't represent their respective divisions by season's end.  The wronged schools, Georgia and Arkansas, really haven't been playing well enough overall to be a conference factor which has allowed this issue to slip under the rug a bit.

In years past, this has not been the case, and it won't be the case in the near future. The SEC needs to get on top of this issue.  The passion of SEC fans remains unmatched, and the conference doesn't want any of that passion directed towards their officials.
