SEC Daily Fever: Kiffin And Saban Build Their Programs Using Past NFL Perspective

Posted: Oct 21, 2009

As Tennessee and Alabama prepare for their annual October clash, the Vols seem to be a couple of recruiting classes behind the Tide in building a roster to compete for a league title. Nick Saban came back from the NFL with recruiting as priority one and has built a talented and physical squad with tons of depth. Lane Kiffin looks to be going down the same path in Knoxville as he rebuilds the Vols.

On Tuesday, Kiffin detailed how the Tide model under Saban is similar to what he’s trying to do in Knoxville:

- Recruit great players.
- Instill discipline.
- Play a power, pro-style game.
- Compete for championships.

"I love the style they play and what they do,'' Kiffin said.

"They come at you and don't try to trick you. They're very physical on both sides of the ball. They play more like NFL teams do.”

That last statement is a throwback to SEC days of old. While much of college football has gone towards a spread mentality, it’s interesting that Alabama is doing it the old-fashioned way.

This shouldn't be a surprise because Saban and Kiffin both were NFL head coaches.  Kiffin has also been honest in his desire to take a page out of his old coach's book as well.  Pete Carroll at USC also had NFL pedigree which influences his program in the same way that Saban does at Alabama.

Look for the Vols to move in that same Carroll/Saban direction under Kiffin.
