SEC Daily Fever: Georgia's Richt looks to right ship in Athens

Posted: Nov 04, 2009

While much of the attention following the Florida-Georgia game has been on Brandon Spikes eye-gouging of Washaun Ealey, the reality for the Bulldogs is that they have the feel of a program that has slipped a notch from past seasons. There were some expected growing pains on offense this year after the departures of Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, but a struggling defense (89th in the nation in scoring defense) and a ton of penalties (118th in the nation) have the Dawgs standing at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The AJC’s Jeff Schultz believes that things have become too comfortable with the Georgia program, and that there is too little accountability with the Bulldogs. Those same arguments were made in Knoxville last year regarding Phil Fulmer, and now it looks like Mark Richt will have to deal with those same concerns. Will he fire embattled defensive coordinator Willie Martinez? Is Mike Bobo the right man to lead the offense? Why do the Dawgs commit so many critical penalties? These questions and more will have to be answered by Richt in the near future.

The 45-19 loss at Tennessee already has UGA fans worried that the Lane Kiffin-led Vols may challenge Florida in the Eastern Division before Georgia does. It is up to Richt to regain the confidence of his fan base, and he will definitely have some tough decisions to make after the ’09 season.
