SEC Daily Fever: Meyer looks bad after Spikes debacle

Many fans around the league are asking the question this week: what kind of program is Urban Meyer running in Gainesville? While many have questioned Meyer’s recruiting tactics (exhibit A, B. C, D) and his team’s 24 arrests in four years, much of the criticism seems to disappear quickly when those same players win two BCS Titles in three years.

The Gators were all over the news this week with the Brandon Spikes’ eye-gouge of Washaun Ealey and Meyer’s criticism of SEC officials (a week after Mike Slive threatened to suspend league coaches for such public comments). The Florida coach did not want to punish his star linebacker, so he half-heartedly gave Spikes a half-game suspension against Vanderbilt. After his coach was called out in the media and by fans for such a weak “penalty”, Spikes decided to remove himself for the game against the Commodores. This action begs the question: who has the better judgment, the college senior or the head coach?

The other issue in all this is the SEC office and their potential hypocrisy. While Meyer’s comments on the officials do not seem too harsh, they did come in the week after Commissioner Slive and the league voted to fine and suspend members for public criticism of referees. Will Slive take any real action towards Meyer other than a small fine? Most fans around the conference doubt it, much like he did nothing on the Spikes’ suspension.
