Big 12 Daily Fever: '09 Teams Succeeding With Less Passing, More Running

Last week, Nebraska relied on the running game to beat Oklahoma while the Sooners threw five interceptions. Oklahoma State won at Iowa State by running for 331 yards while only throwing for 142. Kansas State beat rival Kansas by rushing for 266 yards and passing for 66.

The question has to be asked: what is happening to the Spread passing attacks in the Big 12?

We have written before about the effect Mike Leach and the four-wide receiver sets have had on the league. Some expected to see a little less production this year with the departures of Chase Daniel, Josh Freeman, and Graham Harrell, but the reality is that Texas A&M is the only conference team with a better offense than a year ago.

With all of the quality quarterbacks coming out of Texas (plus league coaches who like to throw the football), we don’t expect the spread attacks to go away. However, the 2009 season has seen the pendulum of passing swing back towards the running game.
