SEC Daily Fever: Florida Dealing with Distraction before Big Game

Posted: Dec 02, 2009

Florida was dealt a self-imposed blow this week in their quest to repeat as SEC and national Champions. All-American defensive end Carlos Dunlap was arrested for DUI and subsequently suspended for the SEC Title Game.

Coach Urban Meyer was shocked by the actions of his talented defender:

"Carlos obviously made a very poor decision," Meyer said. "I have not spoken to him or his family yet. I know you're going to ask if he's going to play. He's not going to play (Saturday). But I want to visit with him and his family first, and go from there."

Meyer said Dunlap's arrest only a few days before UF's biggest game of the season was "stunning".

"Stunning is probably a good word," Meyer said. "Young guys make decisions all the time. This one is a serious one. Yeah, stunning."

With their depth, the Gators will probably be all right on the defensive line but obviously it hurts to lose your best rush end. The rest of the team will need to make sure his story is not a distraction in an already-hectic week.

As for Dunlap, he is a junior who projects as a first-round draft choice so his career in Gainesville may be over. However, NFL clubs will have a huge red flag next to his name, and he could see his draft stock decline with this unfortunate incident.
