SEC Daily Fever: Spurrier Extended at South Carolina

Posted: Dec 15, 2009

it may not seem like a big deal that South Carolina added an extra year to Steve Spurrier's contract this week, but it shows the USC administration is sticking with the program. After some late season fizzles the last few years, it would be easy to jump right back into the coaching carousel. That short-term reaction could doom a program that does not have much history of success, despite an active and passionate fan base.

Spurrier led the Gamecocks to a 7-5 record this season and is 35-27 overall in Columbia. When South Carolina lost four of the next five games this year after a 5-1 start, fans were very vocal about possibly making a change. However, the huge win over in-state rival Clemson made the season look much better. Additionally, Spurrier and his staff have had some recent success on the recruiting trail. South Carolina's University President (Dr. Harris Pastides) commented on the need for the coach’s security:

“It is important for the incoming freshmen to know that coach Spurrier will be here throughout their collegiate careers,” Pastides said in a release. “The extension provides that assurance.”

Exactly. Southern recruiting can be rough battle, especially with other coaches taking shots at you and your program (just ask Lane Kiffin). Now the Ole Ball Coach can tell any potential player that he is under contract through 2013, and that he will be their coach as South Carolina tries to rise to the upper echelon of the SEC.
