SEC Daily Fever: Meyer's December Shows the Roller Coaster of Being an SEC Boss

Posted: Dec 16, 2009

From the outside looking in, things appear pretty sunny for Urban Meyer at the University of Florida. He is 56-10 in five seasons in Gainesville, has won two League and two National Titles, had an undefeated regular season this year, and has another Top 10 recruiting class on the way. But in a recent interview, you would think he just went through a 2-10 season. Those are the consequences of high expectations and playing at the top echelon of college football.

Pat Dooley has the details of Meyer’s December involving “the arrest and suspension of Carlos Dunlap, the loss of two coaches, a numbing loss to Alabama in the SEC title game and a hospital visit”. The head Gator is now answering rumors about the circumstances of his assistants leaving, trying to deal with discipline issues, and planning on the possibility of losing several talented juniors to the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, he has to prepare his team to meet Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl and recruit as well.

Meyer provides a portrait of the uniqueness of being a top flight SEC coach. You can do no wrong one season, but everybody wants answers the next year after a few negatives. It can be the best job in the land, but SEC football is not for the faint of heart.

Honorable Mention SEC Headlines:

Eleven SEC players, including six from Alabama , named first-team AP All-American

Tennessee ’s Berry named consensus All-American for the second straight season
