SEC Daily Fever: Georgia Still Searching for New Defensive Coordinator

Posted: Jan 12, 2010

Bud Foster, John Chavis, and Kirby Smart. That looks like a list of top defensive coordinators in our Swampland footprint, but it also the candidates who have turned down the chance to work for Mark Richt this offseason. As Georgia’s search for a new defensive coordinator continues, many Dawg fans thought Kirby Smart of Alabama might be their new defensive boss. Instead, the UGA alum has decided to turn down a lucrative offer from Georgia and stay on Nick Saban’s staff in Tuscaloosa.

So what’s next for Richt? The process to replace Willie Martinez has gone on for a while now. The Bulldogs are rated as a Top 10 recruiting class at the moment (Signing Day is February 3rd), but their prospects on defense have to be wondering who their coach will be in Athens next year. The 2010 campaign will be a key season for Richt, as UGA tries to improve on a 7-5 season that saw an opening loss to Oklahoma State as well as four SEC defeats.

With only three weeks left in recruiting, it’s time for Georgia to find their new coordinator instead of getting raises for their rivals’ defensive bosses.
