Big 12 Daily Fever: Texas Tech and Tuberville make an Interesting Fit

What a winter it has been for the Texas Tech. From the firing of Mike Leach to the inspired Bowl victory to the coaching search, Red Raider fans have had quite the ride in wondering what’s next for their football program. That question has now been answered with the hiring of former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. The Tech administration seemed to want a big name to replace the popular Leach, and the availability of Tuberville worked for both the school and the coach who was feverishly seeking a new job.

The next question for Texas Tech fans is what happens to their vaunted passing offense. Tuberville was known mostly for a running game and defense strategy at Auburn, and even the Red Raider recruits have voiced concern over a possible change in the passing attack. However, the new boss in Lubbock says the offense is staying:

“We’re going to air it out,’’ Tuberville said. “We’re going to keep the ‘Air Raid.’ I think it’s something that Tech has hit upon that gives them that identity to recruit and we all want to have.’’

Even if the former Auburn coach weren’t comfortable with the wide-open passing game, he said he’s smart enough to know it resonates with recruits

“Most of the time, the good players across the country can recognize Texas Tech from one thing, and that is the ‘Air Raid’ — throwing the football, making big plays and being exciting,’’ he said. “And so we’re going to continue that.’’

Tuberville has quite the track record as a head coach, and his addition will definitely bring attention to the Big 12. Even if Red Raider fans do not like the circumstances behind Leach’s ouster, now they will rally around Tuberville as he tries to continue the momentum built up in Lubbock over the last decade.
