Home Movies For the Folks

In my friend Paul Hemphill’s collection of stories, The Good Old Boys, there is a story called "Home Movies For the Folks" written in 1973. The story outlines the history of movie making in Georgia. In 1965, Georgia ranked as the fourth most movie-making state in the country. Hemphill outlines the grassroots techniques, low budgets and stereotypical perspectives people operated upon to create low-budget films and send them out to movie houses all across the South. Names like Slim Pickins appear in this interesting tale. At one point, one character says to another: “Look, if a guy will pay 98 cents for a Roy Drusky record, he’ll pay a dollar to see and hear Roy sing two song, and plus get a movie…”

The story details roots to moonshine running, stock car racing and the 'Good Old Boy’ effect in the North Georgia mountains, which served as the fulcrum for attracting Hollywood or Atlanta movie makers during the 60s and 70s. Some of these down home—home movies for the folks—include such films as Legend of Blood Mountain, Gold Guitar and There’s A Still On The Hill. In a Nashville movie (backed by Georgians) like Forty-Acre Fued stars country musicians such as Ferlin Husky, Minnie Pearl and Del Reeves. Already the seeds of Americana were sowed on those dusty North Georgia roads...

Hemphill’s fine story opens like this: “On a Thursday in August, just as the sun was crouching behind the cool green hills in the far northeast corner of Georgia, few occupants of the town of Clayton had noticed the sleek Atlanta car as it slipped off Highway 441 North and stopped in the large asphalt parking area of the new Heart of Rabun Motel. Every day, about dusk, the out-of-town cars begin peeling off into the motels dotting the road that crawls into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Most of them carry tourists on their way to the higher hills of North Carolina…”

From there, Hemphill cuts to the chase. Even Walt Disney invaded Rabun County to film the The Great Locomotive Chase. The work of Paul Hemphill captures the essence of southern culture in the ever-evolving American civilization…and in most cases, Hemphill’s work provides a glimpse into eras that will not come again.

In the Foreword of the book, Hemphill wrote: “It was frustrating. The dying towns were being revived, I found, by Bland Chamber of Commerce types self-conciously concealing their drawls as they recited their mindless Babbittry. The “fightin” and “dancing” clubs were being replaced by Holiday Inns. The stock-car tracks were now high-banked asphalt ‘superspeedways’. The moonshiners had sold out to absentee syndicates. The isolated mountaineers sat in front of color television sets, laughing along with the East at the absurdity of “Hee-Haw”. Over drinks one night in Greensboro, North Carolina, I told these things to a friend. ‘You’re not re-discovering the South. You’re writing an epitaph to it…’”
