New Information on William Faulkner's Historical Sources Comes to LIght

According to an article in this week's New York Times (February 11, 2010), a Southern literature scholar from Emory University, Dr. Sally Wolff-King, may have discovered an important connection between several volumes of a diary and farm ledger kept by Francis Terry Leak, a wealthy Mississippi planter who lived in the mid 1800s, and numerous incidents in the novels of Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner.

Patrician Cohen, a journalist for the Times, writes that although Leak's original documents have been used by scholars since they were donated to the University of North Carolina by his descendants in 1946, it was not until recently that Dr. Sally Wolff-King of Emory University in Atlanta, GA, discovered the link between the diaries and the work of Faulkner. Wolff-King calls the discovery "a once in a lifetime literary find." She goes on to say that the diary and a number of family stories "seem to have provided the philosophical and thematic power for some of his [Faulkner's] major works."

Dr. Wolff-King contacted Dr. Edgar Francisco (age 79) who is an alumnus of Emory and is the great-great-grandson of Francis Terry Leak. Dr. Francisco's father and Faulkner were childhood friends and later hunting and drinking buddies until, according to Cohen's article, they drifted apart perhaps because Mr. Francisco's wife did not approve of Faulkner's drinking, smoking, and cursing. Cohen also notes that Dr. Francisco would not have made public his connection with Faulkner and his great-great-grandfather's journals had not his wife and Dr. Wolff-King encouraged him. Dr. Francisco told the Times that he had often seen Faulkner with the diaries in his hands, pouring over them and taking notes. He also told the Times that Faulkner would rant when reading about Leak's pro-slavery and pro-Confederacy views and keep on taking notes.

A preview of the findings of Dr. Sally Wolff-King was published in the Fall 2009 issue of the Southern Literary Journal. Her upcoming book Ledgers of History: William Faulkner, An Almost Forgotten Friendship, and an Antebellum Diary is due to be released by Louisiana State University Press this June.
