The Strange Case of Dr. Amy Bishop

As the story behind the fatal shootings at the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday, Feb 13, begins to unfold, the actual facts behind the incident become more and more obscure. First of all, those who were victims of the shooting were not at a meeting to discuss the future of Harvard trained neurobiological Dr. Amy Bishop. Bishop had been denied tenure in the spring of 2009, and her appeal had not been successful. The meeting at the university on Friday was a routine one to discuss fall schedules and other such everyday matters. However, as Bishop did not receive tenure and her appeal for a review was rejected by the administration, Dr. Bishop would not be returning to teach at UAH after the spring semester 2010.

Both Dr. Bishop and her husband James Anderson are currently employed by the university. Anderson. who is a reseacher at UAH, said in an interview following the shootings that he had no prior knowledge of the shootings. He maintained that he did not know that Dr. Bishop had taken a gun with her to the campus that morning, nor did he know where she had obtained it. However, the plot thickens. In 1986 Amy Bishop (who is either 42 or 44 as records are unclear) fatally wounded her teenaged brother at their family home in Massachusetts. The shooting was ruled an accident and no charges were filed. According to Saturday's New York Times, Bishop had quarreled with her brother prior to the shooting. The following is from the New York Times:

"On Saturday afternoon, the police in Braintree, Mass., announced that 24 years ago, Dr. Bishop had fatally wounded her brother, Seth Bishop, in an argument at their home, which The Boston Globe reported on its Web site. The police were considering reopening the case, in which she was not charged and the report by the officer on duty at the time was no longer available, said Paul Frazier, the Braintree police chief."

Then today's Boston Globe published the news that Amy Bishop and her husband James Anderson had been questioned in an incident that involved the sending of a pipe bomb to a Harvard Medical School professor in 1993. The article said that Amy Bishop was questioned along with her husband, James Anderson, after two 6-inch pipe bombs were sent to the Newton, Mass., home of Dr. Paul Rosenberg. The Rosenberg's fled the house and the bombs never detonated. The Globe said investigators had searched Dr. Bishop's and Mr. Anderson's home, but the United States Attorney's office did not seek any charges against them, and no one was ever charged in the case.

Meanwhile, friends and family of the slain and wounded UAH faculty and staff members are consumed by grief, grief made even more inconsolable by frustration and confusion. How did such a unimaginable event take place and where will it all end?
