Photographer Jim Marshall Passes Away

Our good friend John Lyndon has allowed Swampland to post a remembrance of Jim Marshall who passed away on Wednesday March 24.

For those unfamiliar with Jim Marshall the man, most will know his work. This is from his NY Times obit:

Among his most famous pictures are Hendrix setting his guitar aflame at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967, which established Hendrix’s early reputation as a wild man; Cash angrily gesturing with his middle finger while at the San Quentin State Prison in 1969; a boyish Bob Dylan following a stray tire down a New York street in 1963; and Janis Joplin clutching a bottle of Southern Comfort backstage in 1968.

To get those pictures he insisted on extraordinary access, and usually got it. He was a favored portraitist for many of his subjects, who sometimes allowed him to follow them for days. He was the only photographer allowed backstage for the Beatles’ 1966 farewell concert in San Francisco, was at Woodstock in 1969, and shot the Rolling Stones’ 1972 tour on assignment for Life magazine.

Annie Leibovitz once called him “the rock ’n’ roll photographer.”

Lyndon writes:

The only contact I had with Jim was when he shot the cover of the Fillmore East album, which was not in New York, but in Macon in an alley near Capricorn Studios. I remember Jim beginning the shoot with a Hasselblad and then making the comment to me as he switched either to a Leica or Nikon black body that this was the camera he preferred. He also told Jaimoe, that if Jaimoe did not move back on his head that floppy hat he was wearing, we were not going to see any of his face. Years later Kirk West recovered the equipment case with the title to the album stenciled on it, which had been stolen off the back of the equipment truck shortly after the release of the album. The equipment case is on exhibit at the Big House, but that is a story for a different day.

Lyndon was also able to get some comment from Kirk West:

jim was a good friend of the allman brothers band family and spent the day with the band and crew last may when the abb played at the fox in oakland.

jim spent all afternoon in the production office telling stories and talking about his life as a photographer and documentarian of rock history.

he brought several matted and signed prints of his famous shot of duane playing in the bathroom of the holiday inn in san fransisco in october of 1971 before the winterland shows. when the band arrived for the show he presented the prints to each of the band members before they went on. he stayed for a few songs and did a few shots of the band on stage but wasnt feeling well enough to shoot the whole show or stay till the end.

jim and galadrielle allman were very close and shared many good times together. he wrote glowingly about duane in a couple of his books and galadrielle wrote a piece for jim's new book "match prints" about duane.

jim shot some of the most famous shots of the abb and his impact will remain forever in the hearts of allman brothers fans.

the cover of the best live album ever recorded and dozens of iconic shots of the boys from 70 & 71 --- fillmore west-- winterland --- santa monica civic center --- memphis 9/71-- and macon on broadway across the street from the capricorn studio 4/71 --- all moments captured forever by jim marshall.
