New Orleans and Indianapolis Add Defensive Playmakers

Many teams in the NFL Draft feel compelled to fill an immediate need with their first selection, but some elite clubs are able to take the best player available and build quality depth for the future. Those picks do not always excite fans on draft day but tend to work out quite well when the season starts. The Saints and Colts fall into this category, and both squads were able to choose a top-notch player at positions where they already have solid starters.

New Orleans selected Florida State cornerback Patrick Robinson in the first round despite having Jabari Greer and Super Bowl-hero Tracy Porter entrenched as their starters. Many in the Who Nat Nation probably wanted to see the Saints get some help for their run defense, but you can never have enough good defensive backs. The Saints were forced into signing street free agents Chris McAlister and Mike McKenzie at corner last season, so Robinson will be a welcome asset.

Indianapolis was in a similar situation to New Orleans, and GM Bill Polian selected TCU edge rusher Jerry Hughes. While many thought the Colts would address their offensive line in Round 1, Indy selected the lightning-fast Hughes because of his high potential and perfect fit for what they do defensively. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are great weapons as a defensive end pair, but the smaller pass rushers tend to battle injuries late in the season. Freeney struggled to see the field for much of last season’s Super Bowl run, so adding another sack artist like Hughes should improve the wear and tear on the Freeney/Mathis duo.

Both Indy and New Orleans have elite quarterbacks/offenses and should be in good shape to make another deep postseason run in 2010. Getting help on defense was a solid priority to address in the draft, and both teams added quality depth throughout their selections. Both Robinson and Hughes may have been slight surprises to the fan bases, but both will pay dividends during the upcoming campaign.
