Big "XII" Stays Regional Instead of Going West

The college expansion debate and possible maneuvering by key universities over the last month had everyone in our Swampland Footprint buzzing with opinion(s), but for now all of those negotiations and rumors did not amount to much movement. The Big XII did lose two members, with Nebraska heading to the Big Ten (tough loss but not catastrophic) and Colorado (don’t let the door hit you..) joining the Pac-10. However, the Big “XII” is just happy to still be a conference after Texas , Oklahoma , Oklahoma State and Texas Tech flirted with the Pac-10 and almost created big-time college football’s first 16-team league.

The fact that Texas (the obvious key player in any expansion talk) decided to stay in its regional place--and not create a monstrosity conference stretching from Austin to Seattle --seems like a great decision. One of the biggest appeals of college athletics is its regionalism. That hometown pride creates rivalries and a passion for sports that even the professional ranks cannot beat. The thought of a Texas-California “Pac-1X” network probably looks good on paper, but it’s very hard to see that type of arrangement working long term. Two key players who fought to stay regional are coaching legend and Texas A&M Board of Regents member Gene Stallings, as well as Oklahoma State lead booster T. Boone Pickens:

"First of all, if I had my druthers I would wish that the conference did not disband," said Stallings, who played for Bear Bryant at A&M and won a national title at Alabama as head coach.

"I would really hate to see A&M and its rivalries with Texas and Texas Tech and Oklahoma go away. I hated to see the Southwest Conference disband. I'm the sort of person who holds on to old values."

Another key conference voice weighed in during the afternoon – Dallas oilman and financier T. Boone Pickens, whose $400 million in donations have transformed Oklahoma State . He was optimistic after giving a talk in Austin and said he liked the idea of a lean Big 12.

"I don't want to go off and leave Iowa State , Kansas State or Baylor," Pickens said. "The Pac-10 is not that interesting. I'd rather trim the conference. I don't care if Nebraska leaves, I have no love for them. And I'd just as soon Missouri leave, and Colorado kind of fell in the same category."

Nebraska left the league because of the uneven split in television dollars that saw Texas and Oklahoma pulling in more revenue than its Big XII brethren (as opposed to the SEC having an even 12-team split). The new deal (although not done yet) is projected to have more total dollars for each school, but will still have the bigger programs pulling in the most cash. Will that be acceptable long term or will some Big XII schools get expansion fever again soon? That is the multi-million dollar question.

For all of the posturing, the fact that Texas stayed in the Big XII will be good for college football. Any talk of “academic mission” or “exploring the best fit” was just code for the money grab that is big-time college football. Texas may have the most dollars, but every school is looking for more. As far as the future, the league’s members may like just having ten teams for a while. That number may take away the conference title game, but the money per school would increase in the short term. The winner of the Red River Rivalry would seemingly have a fairly clear path to a BCS Title berth.

The Big XII could look to add TCU and Houston one day, something that makes sense to us here at Swampland. You would then have a Texas division, and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State would strengthen the North. For whatever may happen in the future, it’s nice to be talking about regional rivalries again, and not the upcoming Oklahoma State-Washington State “conference game”.
