David Barbe Named New Director of UGAs Music Business Program

David Barbe Interim UGA Music Business Program Director

Congratulations to David Barbe. Athens, Georgia, producer Barbe now serves as the ‘Interim Music Director' of the University of Georgia's Music Business Program. He's a good choice. Barbe stands as a pillar of the Athens sports and music communities. He coaches little league baseball, owns Chase Park Studios and records his own music as well as various collaborative groups he's in. At Chase Park, Barbe has recorded The Drive By Truckers, R.E.M. and Bloodkin to name only a few as well as his own band The Quick Hooks. Barbe is a highly sought after producer.

Barbe became the interim director on August 1. Co-founder of the program, Bruce Burch, resigned in July to begin a music program at Kennesaw State University. UGA will still search for a permanent director, but Barbe may emerge as the best fit. A resident of Athens since 1981, Barbe attended UGA and began assisting acclaimed producer John Keane at his studio. There is a reason bands like The Drive By Truckers and Bloodkin have recorded most of their albums at Barbe's studio...

Robert T. Sumichrast—the dean of Terry College spoke last week about Barbe: “David came strongly recommended as someone who could step into this role immediately. He is highly respected locally and nationally as a musician, engineer and studio owner. We are pleased that we are able to recruit someone with David’s reputation in the industry in such a short amount of time.”

The UGA Music Business Program allows students to earn an interdisciplinary certificate in music business by receiving a hands-on education about copyright issues, recording, artist management, publicity, production and technological insight. More on the UGA and Kennesaw State music programs soon…
