Daniel Lanois’ Soulful Mining & Black Dub

Daniel Lanois’ new band, Black Dub, augments jazz, reggae, blues and soul into one potent sound. Singer-songwriter Daniel Lanois produced records by Bob Dylan (Oh Mercy, Time Out of Mind), Willie Nelson (Teatro), Emmylou Harris (Wrecking Ball), the Neville Brothers (Yellow Moon) and Neil Young (Le Noise). He also played an instrumental role in the soundtrack to Billy Bob Thornton’s film Sling Blade. This week Black Dub released their emotive new album. On November 20, Lanois’ memoir, Soul Mining: A Musical Life hits bookstores.

In June, while working on Neil Young’s Le Noise, Lanois wrecked his motorcycle and broke ten bones. He’s since recovered and now prepares to hit the road with Black Dub later this month. Black Dub consists of Lanois writing all the music and playing guitar. His longtime New Orleans cohorts Daryl Johnson (bass) and Brian Blades (drums) comprise the rhythm section. The late, great Chris Whitley’s daughter, Trixie, serves as the group’s brilliant singer. From what I’ve heard of the record so far, she certainly inherited her father’s musical soul.

It’s a diverse record, yet it retains all the sonic Lanois trademarks. After just hearing the first four songs, it sounds like another classic. I'll get the review up soon. Lanois’ music speaks for itself. I’m also curious to see what he writes in his memoir about some of those aforementioned albums. Hopefully Black Dub will bring their thick funk to the south...
