Let Your Feet Do The Talkin': A Holiday Gift (Part Two)...

Stuart Copeland’s Latest Documentary

On the heels of yesterday’s holiday gift dispatch, today’s stocking selection emerges as another Dust To Digital release, Let Your Feet Do The Talkin’. This documentary by Stuart Copeland tells the story of buckdancing legend Thomas Maupin. At the age of 70, Maupin remains one of the greatest old time dancers in America.

This indelible film preserves Maupin’s recovery from cancer to accepting a nationally recognized award. Copeland’s documentary proves to be an emotive portrait of an American icon. To see Maupin—a Tennessee native—dance while being backed-up by a band of guitarists, fiddlers and banjo players proves unforgettable. Other classic footage in this film includes Maupin on his farm, interviews and recorded performances.

Phil Jamison revealed in the liner notes about the origins of buckdancing: “Buckdancing is a traditional form of percussive step dance that can still be found at music events and gatherings in rural communities throughout the South. In this solo dance form, individual dancers create a percussive rhythmic accompaniment to music, making the use of their toes, heels or whole foot. As opposed to memorized sequences of standardized steps performed by modern cloggers, traditional old-time buckdancing is improvisational and spontaneous and encompasses a wide range of steps and personal styles…”

Other features on the DVD include live performances, a dance workshop, another short film by Copeland called Jennifer and a 1947 documentary narrated by Pete Seeger with Woody Guthrie and Sonny Terry called To Hear Your Banjo Play. Let Your Feet Do The Talkin’ earned official selections from the Big Sky Film Festival, Rooftop Film Series, The Nashville Film Festival and was nominated for Best Short Documentary at Indie Memphis 2010. Let Your Feet Do the Talkin’ provides a memorable glimpse into the life of one of America’s dance pioneers.
