Macon's Tribute To Otis Redding
9/16/07

At the Georgia Music Hall of Fame exists a tribute to local hero Otis Redding titled "Otis Redding: I've Got Dreams To Remember" that will remain on display until next year. This exihibition coincides with the 40th Anniversary of Redding's death.
Of course, Otis Redding's legend casts a long and wide shadow on American music. His songs like "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay", Ole Man Trouble", "Hard To Handle", "Mr. Pitiful" and many others remain forever etched in southern soul music.
I had my ticket to Friday's show at the Macon City Auditorium that featured Dexter and Otis Redding III, The Bar-Kays, Taj Mahal and Gregg Allman, but sharp chest pains and nausea forced me to get an EKG at the hospital and I missed the show. I returned to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Saturday for the exhibit that features rare photos, handwritten lyrics, posters, rare STAX artifacts, video performances, contracts, personal notes and a treasure trove of material that highlights Redding's career.
Redding died at 26 years old in a plane crash less than a week after he recorded "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay". This exhibition proves worth any serious music fan to visit this indelible display.
