I hear a lot of arguments about what the South is. The Univ. of North Carolina even gives degrees in what I call You Ain't Southern Studies. People come up with maps of sweet tea usage, kudzu growth, percentages of "y'all" utterances per capita. But secretly, deep down in their hearts, it's the old Confederacy, and that's where people misunderstand West Virginia. It may surprise Southerners to learn that most of what constitutes the state of WV consists of counties that voted to secede from the Union. There has never been written a true story of the creation of the state. The state was created by a Union junta, there is no other way to say it. Another surprising fact is that the current state constitution of WV was written by ex-Confederates in 1872. To my knowledge there is no statue in the state erected to the Unionists who created the state. But Charleston boasts a large statue of native son Stonewall Jackson.

Steve Cropper is so much fun to interview. Be sure to ask him about his recent Australian Tour backing GUY SEBASTIAN. Guy and Steve, Duck Dunn, Steve Potts and Lester and Patricia Snell all toured. Last year they made a Soul tribute album at Artdent studios Memphis called THE MEMPHIS ALBUM which is to be released in the USA early 2009. Here in Australia it went trple platinum. A really stunning piece of work recorded to analog tape the old fashioned way. Guy Sebastian's vocals will astound you - he's truly an old SOUL.
copperhead says...
Ok you opened a can of worms. I agree with you but I also think the only real difference you can make is the people you meet each day. I came from the " REVOLUTION" MC5 , the weathermen, Abby Hoffman. I met a lot of the folks and I'm not sure we changed the world. I do know You have to work within the system to change it. I know how to make a difference in somebodys life but I can't change the world. I know at the end of the day I can listen to some southern rock and be at peace. The question is should the music be political or a way to sooth the soul. I loved Steve Earles Copperhead road but I never listen to the Revolution starts now. I don't know Buff I agree with you but I have to ask when you Jam with The Tucker Band and sing Can't you see. Well there is your peace. I have no answers but as Travis Tritt said. I love to Jam with the Skynrd Band.

We here in the U.S.A have more oil underground than Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Venezuela, Brazil and most any any other oil producing country you can name. Our environmentalist friends won't let us go get it. ANWAR (Arctic National Wildlife Animal Refuge) consists of 19 million acres of pristine untouched land siting upon several billion barrels of oil. Uninhabited by humans and no one goes there. Bill Clinton vetoed a proposal over 10 years ago to drill in ANWAR. 19 million acres and drilling would consist of several thousand acres. Someone said that it was like putting a postage stamp on a football field. We have billions of oil under the Gulf and Pacific Coast, in Colorado and several other western states. But we haven't been allowed to build an new oil refinery here in the U.S.A. in over 30 years. You want to talk about an X-File episode???? Again because of our good old environmentalist friends here we have President Bush begging OPEC to increase their amount of oil production. They basically spit in our faces and say "NO". Then Spain has some unrest and they agree to increase production by half a million barrels!!!! Again The X-Files!!!! Barrac Hussein Osama wants to tax big oil companies for their windfall profits!!!!! Companies like that don't pay that tax!!!! They incorporate that tax into the cost of the product they sell and we will ultimately pay the bill!!!! Simple economics!!!! There's a petition going around called "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less". I've signed it and sent it to all my friends. At last count I think they had over a million signatures. Lord I could go ond and on.... Buff if you want I can send you the online link to the petition and you can post it on Gritz. The sound you just heard was the sound of boards creaking as I stepped OFF of my soap box. Also.... Outlaw, What has convinced you that President Bush was in "kahootz" with Osama? I'd really like to know. I'm in the dark here. ABB & Skynyrd Rule!!!!!
outlawcountry says...
And ask Henry how he can call it The Outlaws without Hughie? Ask Jim Dandy Mangrum does it make him mad David Lee Roth stole his entire act from JD.
outlawcountry says...
George W Bush was in kahootz with Osama. I am convinced. I agree with your ideas about the govt keeping secrets from us and this oil thing shouldn't even be an issue. We should be running on solar or battery. Yes, and The Allman Bros are #1.
stevet says...
I see you have an interview upcoming with Henry Paul. Please ask him when we can expect the new Outlaws CD. (Hopefully while I'm still alive!) Also, did you notice that the new Blackhawk and Outlaws bands were virtually the same? I think the one difference I noticed was that Billy Crain doesn't play with Blackhawk. As for the CD, hopefully he's not holding out for some big label contract. Just an independent release would make us, the fans happy. Witness the fiasco with the last, still unreleaed Blackhawk CD. I want to hear Hughie's last work as soon as humanly possible!!! Steve

Thanks for posting guys...I agree OHGuy, and strange as it seems, I have heard KISS riffs that sounded awfully Southern. Especially early on, from Destroyer back, during the period I consider their very best. Woody told me about playing with Peter Criss. How funny is that? Allen said he didn't like Peter, but it was "an experience." ...LOL... I once heard a bootleg of Paul Stanley singing a verse of Whipping Post and there's video of him from the R&R Fantasy Camp on YouTube doing a great job on Honky Tonk Women and especially on the Ides of March hit "Vehicle." Would have loved to see Arti jam with Paul. Ace played here a month ago but I was sick and missed it. :-( I did get a live disc of the show and it was hot....Thanks Rebyll for the b'day wish...I hear you Copperhead. I agree with your statement as well. I love a lot of stuff, but SOUTHERN ROCK is my passion....Thanks again.

Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUFF!!!! I never saw KISS live but I was a big fan also. My older cousin from Maryland was a big fan too but outgrew them quickly. Imagine my elation when she gave me all he KISS albums from the first one through Alive!!!
OHGuy says...
Hey Michael, never posted here but am a huge Kiss/Southern Rock fan. As you know, underneath the greasepaint, Kiss really was a good band. They wrote some really great songs with great riffs and solo's that really weren't too different than some of the early Skynyrd, Hatchet stuff. You could clearly tell that they all shared some of those same influences. Their approach was different but musically they were all cut from the same cloth. Even Artimus recently was quoted as being a convert when he worked with Paul at the RNR fantasy camp and it is always a highlight when son of a "swamper" Jay Johnson tears into "Watchin' You" or "She" with SRA. Heck even Paul and Peter said they both saw the Allman's at the Filmore. Listen to "love Them from Kiss". It's got a funky Allman groove to it. BTW Ace Frehley spent many summers in NC with his grandparents. Check him out on tour. He's rockin'!!

What; No Atlanta! That's where Skynyrd was discovered and so many great Southern Rock bands played. The Fox! Need I say more. Also got to put Spartanburg a little higher. Yea the Allman's were born here in Nashville but hated the music scene and had to play around Daytona Beach, FL where they grew up and people got their sound ( hadn't much changed here by the way when it comes to Southern Rock ) Can't argue with your top three. I think Spartanburg or Atlanta should be fourth. Glad to see you give Tupelo a shout. Although Paul Thorn was actually born in Wisconsin! Not sold on Athens being a Southern Rock town. I think the local music crowd there would cringe at the thought! Thank's for the list though Buffalo and opening it up for debate.

What a tour of cities. So much good music. Buff we opened for a Allman Brothers Cover Band In the late 70s at a place in Spartinburg. It was down town and up a hugh flight of stairs no elevator. I thought we would die getting the B-3 up the stairs. I've never been back but the place had a ton of pool tables and a starnge mix of long hairs and rednecks. One of Guitar players for the cover band played without a pick and had long fingernails . Do you know the name of the place? In Wilmington we opened up for Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. We opened up with a 45 min version of wipping post and the people booed Gary Puckett off the stage. We got fired but our honor was at stake. If you were in MB when Alabama was at the Bowlery we played at Duffys up stairs and at the Ratskeller across from the Gay Dlophine. We were called The cellar wall. I played a black double Bass set of Rogers and the Guitar player played a red gibson hollow body . Our bass played moved to Austin and giged with Willie some. His brothet was Leland Wadell he was mentioned in Steve Earles Bio and Played drums some with Shaver. Did ever meet him? He taught me to play a double bass kit.
copperhead says...
My Alabama Story. They were playing Haloween at the YES! Holiday Inn Downtown in MB. This was about a year before they hit. I was bartending and the band was so broke that they traded me T shirts and Signed LPs in exchange for food and Jack Danels. I have the T shirts my ex ran off with the LPs. A year latter thay were on the radio and TV. They did a great version of Can't you see. Anyway back to the boys. With all the groups throwing in lines about Tucker, free bird. three steps maybe these guys can give them the real deal. My kids and their friends listen to southern rock . My son even found the Winters Brothers and Grinderswitchs without my influence. then they hear the new bands mention the southern rock they go looking for the roots like we did with blues. Give hell guys . Lets hope you can bring the southern back to rock. I love your stage presence in the vidio its shows a love for the misic. I'm sold and I'll buy the CD
michaelbuffalo says...
I sure hope they give credit to Skynyrd and the other great Southern Rockers. Their influence is undeniable, and today's country would not exist without them.
michaelbuffalo says...
Oops! I posted before I read Copperhead's comment! I agree Copper, but the new Bice CD rocks Southern! He is free from the "system" now... I agree The Southern Boys have that old Alabama groove, blended with classic MTB. I spent a week at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach (well, 4 nights) hanging with Alabama a few years before they hit. They were called Wildcountry. They played here in Greenville at Chiefs during the winters, and we'd go see them. I'm gonna have to blog about them now!

These guys have the Tucker sound but when I use to bartend Alabama played a lot. This was before they hit the big time. They had a big southetn rock sound then. These guys remind me a lot of Alabama before they made it big. So maybe there is hope. I love these guys my only fear is you know what record companies do to good bands. Look at Bo from American Idol. They didn't let him record the CD that he could have and he is good,

I had the pleasure of seeing them on tour with Dave Mason. It was like a Gospel Revival with some good blues thrown in. I had an Uncle that was a tent evangilist and snake handler he had a traveling show in the early 60s I will never forget that. My three favorite concerts from that time were B&D and friends, Joe Cocker mad dogs and englishmen, and Claptons Solo Tour.

Loved almost famous. When I started playing I was to young to even be in the bars. I think Almost Famous reflected that being young in the rock and roll world. Everything was a great adventure. I did't see the one with Shaver. Billy Joe is absolutly the real deal. Rush what a movie. Every town has this one hard ass dealer and Gregg nailed the part. I liked southern by the grace of god the tribute tour. The scean with Ronnies hat on the mike stand was goose bump time. Great list you rock
katiedid says...
This is so cool. I love them together or separate! The Beautiful album is Bonnie's best. I need to pick up Delaney. Thanks Buffalo.
palmettopirate says...
Great list Buffalo. Almost famous is one of my all time favorite movie's. I'd be curious to ask Cameron Crowe which parts of the movie were based on who! The scene by the pool where Russell tells William that something's are good for only a few people to know sound's like something Ronnie Van Zant might say for sure. Got to give a shout out to another Cameron Crowe movie here, Elizabethtown. The final scene with the band playing Freebird is worth the price of admisssion alone. Also Rush is an awesome picture with some great period tunes as well as the Clapton classic "Tear's in Heaven" !
michaelbuffalo says...
Joeboy. Thanks for commenting... Yes, Crowe liked Ronnie a lot, very true. He has stated in numerous interviews that Stillwater was a mix of The Allman Brothers, The Eagles and Skynyrd, but the character of Russell was based solely on Dickey Betts. It all goes back to Cameron's first big assignment for Rolling Stone, when at 15, he covered The Allman Brothers Band tour and had quite a time of it. Cameron has had quite a career as a writer and director, AND he is married to NAncy Wilson. How cool is that?
joeboy says...
The Allman Bros. reference for Almost Famous is something I never heard. I know that Cameron Crowe was a very good friend of Ronnie Van Zant's. He loved Van Zant and said that Ronnie was the first person in the music business to treat him with respect because he was so young. He has said in interviews that the fictional Stillwater was actually a cross between Skynyrd and the Eagles.

To not include the King of the Southern Rock Instrumentalists, the highly unique talent of Mike Lawler, who played the Keytar with the Allman Brothers Band from 1980 to 1982, is an embarrassment. I love this kind of concert. In the 70s you could see Wilson Pickett play on the same bill at a show with a rock group. It was about listening to good music. Today we had a outdoor event with beach Music, rock, R&B and 3rd Eye Blind. Radio use to be the same way you could hear Otis Reading and Led Zepplin on the same station. Formats killed music and aims people to one genre. Southern Rock is in my heart looks like Hatchet but listens to Merle Haggard

Wow! Just when I thought you were running out of list. As I stated before Edgar Winter Roadwork tour was unbeleivable. If you didn't stand in your seat they would throw you out. On the live album he said "if you feel like letting it out hot damn let it out." The crowd blew the roof off. How about the best songwriter or best cover of a southern rock song by a non souther rock band.
copperhead says...
I forgot the Alamo[Sorry Billy] Thats more the way it was than John Wayne. It was beleivable. Brave but not over the top.
copperhead says...
I walked 37 miles thru bobwire a cobra snake for neck tie. Who do you love??? Bo Diddley

Bo Diddley was the best. I was supposed to see him in concert in few months. What a loss.

Phil Walden was the true father of southern rock. I for one will never forget that.

coconut1955 says...
I read your review last night and went to see Sex and the City today. I really loved it and appreciate your reviews.
copperhead says...
I saw Tucker play while we were playing on a club circit. We had a few days off and there was an outdoor festavial. I am thinking Love Valley and it seems that Grinderswitch open. May be wrong to much Jack Daniels back then. I remember just being blown away. We did a power Trio that was into a Cream type blues jam thing. I didn't want to touch my drums for a long time after that. Truly a GREAT band. If the orginal were around today the music would fit right in. After so many year the music is not dated.
thunderfoot says...
Me too, Copperhead. Miller should be an honorary southern rocker!
thunderfoot says...
I have heard John Galvin play some mighty classical sounding stuff as well. Perhaps John should be higher up on the list?
thunderfoot says...
Their debut LP is still one of my all time favorites. Why are Dennis and Donnie both alive and kicking but Donnie is not in the band? There's on excuse for that. Donnie is the hot guitarist and Dennis is the show.
thunderfoot says...
Excellent MTB article from Henry. Brings back memories of a time when all the southern rockers were really a brotherhood. Thank you.
t_bassman_1 says...
Classic southern rock-----keep it alive---cuz there is no new rockers out there , it takes all of us old timers to rock SOUTHERN style!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Greenville says...
Its the best show of the year!!!
Benjamin1966 says...
We may very well make the journey this year. You always make it sound like so much fun!
DerekHalsey says...
Lists like these are always interesting and subjective. So, without that in mind, I would disagree on a few of the picks. There is no way that I would put Riff West or Banner Thomas on the list while leaving out Lamar Williams. With his work with the Allman Brothers Band and Sea Level, Lamar's bass riffs were fluid and memorable, with integral bass lines that you can recall instantly in your head years later. Another bass player that would give a couple of the players on the list a run for their money is Andy West of the Dixie Dregs. If the consideration is musicianship and drive, Andy was badass, and good enough to be a big part of the Dregs being nominated for the Grammy Best Rock Instrumental Performance award in 1979. DH
copperhead says...
I'm glad you mentioned Edgar Winters Roadwork. That Cd rocks the house. I saw them live and was they blew the doors off the place. Remind me of Robert Randoff live at the Wetlands. Great list. How about best cove song by a Southern Rock band?
michaelbuffalo says...
Thanks for the comments. It's always hard to limit it to the top "ten." And Greenville, I am all about Woody. It's just that we are only including players from the original era of Southern Rock, 1969 - 1980.
katiedid says...
Chuck Leavell is the greatest. I met him down in Muscle Shoals years ago. He is for sure number one.
Greenville says...
What is a bass players list with out Woody? Whgen he and Warren were with the brothers there was not a tighter band around. Great list but you can't leave Woody out.
Greenville says...
How about Allen Woody????? When he was laying it down for the Brothers they were at their finest. Great list but way to many to just pick 10.
copperhead says...
I've be listening to him since his first release. Love it.
copperhead says...
Great list. Love em
outlawcountry says...
Thanks for telling us about this release Buff. Steve Miller is awesome. I saw him live in 1980 and it was killer.
outlawcountry says...
I loved Cowboy so I am sure I will love this one. I will be ordering it soon. Thanks man.
grobertson says...
How could you possibly leave out Paul Goddard of the Atlanta Rhythm Section? He was so good that he actually had bass solos on studio cuts. I enjoy reading the lists.
jimmyjams says...
Brilliant review. Your writing never fails to blow my mind.
jimmyjams says...
Here's to Billy Powell. King of all piano pickers. Get well brother.
jimmyjams says...
How about LJ? Larry Junstrom? Great list though.
stellaguitar says...
How cool to give some attention to the unsung rock hero, the bass player. Tommy Caldwell was indeed the best and my memories of him playing live are some of my happiest. Thank you Gritz, for making me smile and cry at tyhe same time.
copperhead says...
Outstanding review. I will get the cd. I would give anything to find cds of the Cowboy releases. Know where I can find any??? Any more releases from CRS comimg anytime soon?
tupelohoney says...
Thanks for the review. I will check out Tommy's cd.
coconut1955 says...
Great review Buffalo. Very artistic. I love Talton myself and look forward to hearing the album.
copperhead says...
Get well soon Brothers of the road. Get well .
countryrocker1967 says...
This is so cool. I miss Jakson so much. Not only the best drummer ever, the best human spirit. I know you agree Buffalo.
countryrocker1967 says...
The Crystal Skull rocked, Buff. After reading your review and Roger Ebert's yesterday, I went to see it and loved every minute. Made me feel 18 again.
countryrocker1967 says...
Billy Powell is the greatest piano player ever. Get well soon Billy!
michaelbuffalo says...
Amazing is the perfect word. I have seen Amy perform at the Bohemian Cafe here (not a stone's throw from my humble abode)... She is just that, amazing. No one deserves some Swampland cyber-ink more than little Amy....
michaelbuffalo says...
And I will be the first one on your doorstep, with a 12 pack of ice cold Coors Light and my fishing gear. I really want to see that Hinton film!!!!!! I love Eddie so much, I recorded his song SOMETHING HEAVY in Huntsville and named my CD the same!
waynep says...
Love the lists!
waynep says...
Can't wait to see the rowdy friends tour.
waynep says...
Very cool Buffalo. As a drummer myself, this may be my favorite article so far. I always love your writing and respect your opinion. I agree with copperhead I would have loved to see Monte Yoho in the list. Great job! HAppy memorial day.
copperhead says...
You are out doing yourself. I always liked the Outlaws drummer. I played the chittlin circit for years and I agree Blackfoot had the best drummer. Keep the list coming.
deltablue says...
I love this cd! I think the cover songs are even better than the originals, but I like them all. Billy Bob is the man.
deltablue says...
Why do I miss all the surprise jams? Buff I will be at the Winters Bros jam in June. Hope to meet you and get you to sign my Carolina Dreams book.
deltablue says...
Flirtin with Disaster number one. Hands down.
deltablue says...
Great review Buffalo. I try to support the current Hatchet, but the last two shows I attended sucked bad. I'll be ordering the GAtor cd.
deltablue says...
Now this is a show I can get behind. The best artists in several styles. Some Skynyrd, some Skaggs and Railroad Earth is one of my all time favorite bands! I guess you just sold 2 tickets!
tuckerhead says...
Sold! Just what the doctor ordered. The REAL Molly Hatchet! Hell yeah!
tuckerhead says...
Now, if they only had Marshall Tucker and The Winters Brothers Band, I'd take out a second morgage to be there.
michaelbuffalo says...
Just dash over to www.digstation.com/gatorcountry and order you up a mess of Florida chomp!
copperhead says...
Wow you left us hanging. Where can I get this CD
griffin says...
Nice piece James.Went and got me the record. Not really a bad song in the batch.Matador, Waltz with me.Alabaster Dove, damn.
Greenville says...
Michael I want to thank you and all the fine players who worked so hard to make our event a sucess. The total raised this year was over $230.000 and you gave the folks a show they will never forget. How could you not love a pastor who can and will sing Southern Rock songs with the best of them. Thanks again you made my last event the best ever.
palmettopirate says...
Your right Buffalo there's no doubt that Freebird should be number one. After that how do pick with so many great song's to choose from??????
palmettopirate says...
Your right Buffalo there's no doubt about Freebird being number one. After that how do you choose from so many great song's ??????????
copperhead says...
Any of you guys interested in playing Earth day in Myrtle Beach. We had a big event with 5 bands and Jamming this year. We are planning for next year. I'm with outlawcountry did yall record this???
copperhead says...
What a trip down memory lane. Great stuff keep them coming. Simple Man is my all time favorite. Is Layla or Copperhead Road a perhapes?
outlawcountry says...
Greatlist! Keep them coming!
outlawcountry says...
Did anyone record this? I'd love to hear it. Bet it rocked.
ScottStinson says...
I'd like to first of all thank Michael "Buffalo" Smith for his kind comments about my band Jackson Crossing. The band did begin as an offshoot of Sevenmoore, but has evolved into a full fledged band. We are excited about our debut album and hope to have it out some time this summer. We have been blessed to be working with Paul Hornsby in Macon,Ga. at his Muscadine Recording Studio and with Rusty Milner and Tim Lawter at their Mill Street Studio in Inman, S.C. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing everyone at a Jackson Crossing show real soon.
Benjamin1966 says...
Amen to that palmettopirate. I fully agree. Now they need to make a movie about Jimmy Johnson, Dave Hood and The Swampers. Hank Garland was great and I can't wait to see the movie.
Benjamin1966 says...
I saw the Pour house video on GAC and it was killer. I will but the record when it comes out for sure. Thanks Buff!
Benjamin1966 says...
I absolutely love these lists. Please keep them coming. Although I agree for the most part, Danny Joe Brown would be my pick as best ever. Hell yeah!
palmettopirate says...
Gotta say Buffalo I'm loving your list and If I were to create one it would include most, if not all of the singers you mentioned. However I think that Gregg Allman is the greatest singer of any genre ever. Also maybe I'm a little biased but my number one would be the greatest country singer to ever front a rock band Mister Ronnie Van Zant!!!!!!!!!!!
palmettopirate says...
Gotta say Buffalo I love your list and If I were to create one mine would include most, if not all of the singers you mentioned. However I think Gregg Allman is the greatest singer of any genre ever! Also maybe I'm a little biased but there's none like the greatest country singer to ever front a rock band. My all time favorite Ronnie Van Zant!!!!!!
copperhead says...
This just gets better. I love the list.
michaelbuffalo says...
Parting is so hard in those situations. I wish you an her all the best and here's hoping that one day you can meet again to have a drink and discuss the great writers.
palmettopirate says...
It's great to see a movie focusing on some of the great session players who contribute so much to the recording process but never get much credit. Not to mention how excited I am that Hank was from my home state of South Carolina where so many great musician's hail from but few ever get recognized. May I also recommend a trip to the Musicians Hall of Fame for anyone visting Nashville. They have a fine collection of stuff concerning Hank and many other unsung heroes.
sarasmile says...
Speed Racer sucked. Give me Sex and the City.
sarasmile says...
Love the lists. Hughie should have been #1.
sarasmile says...
Wasn't Garland a friend of Toy Caldwell? The Jazz Winds album is amazing. Great news about the movie.
michaelbuffalo says...
Thanks guys. Look for MANY MORE lists coming soon.... Also, as you can imagine, naming only ten guitarists was quite a job... Steve Gaines for sure. Rick Medlocke, Don Barnes, Donnie and Dennis Winters, Duane Roland... So many killer players. Thanks again for the comments and for reading Gritz!
countryrocker1967 says...
Hey Rebyll, maybe you weren't high enough! We always smoked a bong full before listening to Zappa.
countryrocker1967 says...
Rest in Peace Dottie. A beautiful soul. I own a pile of old Rambos vinyl.
countryrocker1967 says...
This is killer news. I am a long time Sugarfoot Garland fan, and will really be interested in seeing the movie! Thanks for the article.
copperhead says...
I agree Steve Gaines was hot. Also how about the Winters Brothers
rebyll says...
Buff, I don't know. I have tried on several occasions to get into Zappa, but guess it's a little over my head. (I hear he was a musical genius, maybe that's why, ha ha). However I did like "Joe's Garage" and a some other songs from a few 8-Tracks I found here and there back in the day. "Titties & Beer", "Yellow Snow" and such. Recently I tried again with his "Sheik Yer Bootie" CD, but I just couldn't get into it. But if'n ya'll love it, then ROCK ON BRO'S!!!!! Maybe I'll give old Frank another chance soon....
palmettopirate says...
Can't argue with your list Buffalo. Although I would like to nominate Steve Gaines for honorable mention on your list of the top ten southern rock guitar slingers. I know he was only on the scene for a short period of time with Skynyrd but his chicken pickin on " I Know Little " and " his slide work on " T for Texas was incendiary!
palmettopirate says...
Love the list as well Buffalo but would like to nominate Steve Gaines as one of the best Southern Rock Guitar players. I know he was only with Skynyrd for a short time but his chicken pickin on "I Know Little" and slide work on "T for Texas" was awsome!
copperhead says...
You were spot on with the list. Keep it coming
rebyll says...
Buffalo brother, I am REALLY digging these lists. Keep 'em coming.......
rebyll says...
I remember The Rambos from Highway Call. So sad to have happened on Mothers Day......
rebyll says...
Buffalo brother, I am REALLY digging these lists.... Keep 'em coming...
coconut1955 says...
I love me some Zappa.
coconut1955 says...
Loving the new stuff. How about a list of the best shows you ever attended?
countryrocker1967 says...
I may buy this on your recommendation. Back in college at Vandy we used to listen to Zappa's Just Another Band from LA and Overnight Sensation and smoke weed. Of course, we grew up, but I still like Zappa. :-)
countryrocker1967 says...
I thought that Racer movie was going to suck. I am waiting for that Janis Joplin movie with Zoe Deschannel.
countryrocker1967 says...
The lists are a cool addition. I have been reading the archives for hours. So much cool stuff. Thanks Buffalo.
countryrocker1967 says...
I met Eddy a few years ago myself at Nashville Deli at breakfast. He asked me to join him and I did. A sweeter man has never lived. RIP Eddy.
countryrocker1967 says...
Just discovered your site. I used to subscribe to Gritz and am so happy to find you online. I love the Boxmasters. Drove from here (Nashville) down to Huntsville last year to see them play with Billy Bob. Never had so much fun in my life. Keep up the good work.
palmettopirate says...
Living in Music City I have had the honor of meeting a lot of country stars but I never will forget the day I met Eddie Arnold, Chet Atkins, and Porter Wagoner all having dinner together at Arnolds Country Kitchen here in Nashville while on my lunch break one day a few years back. They were all very gracious to a star struck country boy from South Carolina. Thanks for the memories guy's !
palmettopirate says...
Way to go Kirk. I can't wait. The last time I was in Macon I stopped by The Big House and Kirk's wife gave us a great tour. You get the feeling that there's some lingering spirits in those walls. In fact if memory serves me correct, Gregg had just spent the night there recently when we were there!
michaelbuffalo says...
I too, love it sweetheart. You really have the South in your heart....I am so jealous. I have yet to meet my pal Peter Thompson! If only I knew when he was coming across the pond! As for Billy C., well, "I ain't NEVER had too much fun!!" Billy is another one I need to see again soon! Good writing, fun stuff.
katiedid says...
Is Charlie cool or what? That's the first time I have seen his wife. Pretty lady. Maybe she should run for President?? ;-)
katiedid says...
I saw it. Was that cool or what??? Billy Bob looked so cute smiling and mugging at the camera. What a ham. That's why we love him. :-) Oh, and thanks again for the great interview Michael.

Wow I see all these bands and its sad they are mostly gone. I relize I've lived through a special time. There are still good bands out there on the lost hiways but you can't find the music. I thought Travis Tritt would carry the torch for a while but he lost his edge. I love Lee Roy Parnell but he hasn't put out anything for a while. Our heros are gone, The bands that are left are shadows of a time long past. Its better to burn out than fade away.
copperhead says...
Its so sad to see all these bands. Its the end of something wonderful. All of our Heros are gone. There is still a lot of southern rock out there but its hard to find. I thought Trvis Tritt would carry the torch for a while but he has no edge anymore. all the groups I loved are but shodows of what once was. Better to burn out than fade away.

Wow, what a great interview. Well done. I can't wait to see their show. Speaking of great, there's a new addition to Nashville that is worth checking out. Canadian award-winning Trevor Finlay. www.trevorfinlay.com (Country Blues/Rock) He's in Nashville for a while, writing for his next album. Check him out.

Sounds Better independent record store in Myrtle Beach (owned by Jeff Roberts) is on Business 17 directly across the street from Cagneys restaurant. Jeff's dad died recently, so he was busy helping his mom and wasn't open very much. You can usually catch him in the afternoons or call the store at 843-497-3643. He carries a great selection of obscure blues, southern rock, country and more -- including Rickey Godfrey. If you're out of the area, you might not know that Jeff is also the organizer for South By Southeast, a great nonprofit supporter/promoter of alternative and roots music. He's brought acts like Mike Farris, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Scott Miller, David Olney, Harry Manx, Randall Bramblett, Diesel and others to the beach.

Back in the early 70s we opened for Strawberry Alarm Clock and Iron Butterfly. I remember they had a pop song out but live they played Southern Rock. We were a Cream Cover Band and played Blues. I know Ed King went on to fame. It was an Outdoor festival in Myrtle Beach and at old campground with a Fort and a Village. Is there antone out there from the Alarm Clock that remebers that?

I love the site! Just wanted to let you know that there is a cool little band out there called Mozley Rose from Richmond, VA that play some great country and southern-rock jams. They have been touring for the past few years slowly gaining more and more momentum. These are not only great guys and down to earth people, but they kick some serious butt with their guitar licks and great harmonies. Check em out if you can! Again, love the site and all the interviews. http://www.mozelyrose.com/ PS - they also sponsor their own race car at the Southside Speedway in Richmond VA, pretty cool if ya ask me!

Well guys don't hold your breath on hearing any RCB or Blackfoot and for sure no Donnie songs any time in the near future. And as far as this being the last Skynyrd Album I don't belive this to be the case either. I spent 4/20 with the band in Spingfield IL. And not one band member knew anything about any of this. So unless Bubba was lieing to me right to my face I don't belive any of this to be true. Cotton Mouth will be on the next album for sure. That I do know to be true. But this artical stirred alot of stuff up in the Skynyrd camp over this weekend. I don't know where this info came from but I was told by Gary himself that it was wrong. Now if you do catch them this Summer, If your a die hard Southern Rock fan you'll hear that when Ricky plays the intro to Sweet Home He is actually playing Mother, a killer old Blackfoot tune. Just like Brother Hughie used to play Sign of the times (japan bonus track unreleased in the U.S.) as the intro. I aint tryin to dog no one round, but as much as I would love to see some blackfoot songs and real obscure Skynyrd Songs this Summer it just aint gonna happen. Skynfan

Does anyone know if there's been a headstone placed on Phil Walden's grave? The last time I was in Macon and at Rose Hill Cemetery it was still unmarked.

Man, that's awesome....a tribute from one of my favorite artists to another fave. It's so nice to know that other people still feel the way I do about Toy - especially someone like Charlie. Sometimes you think that a "stage" persona is not the real person - I've always felt that what you saw was what you got with Toy, and everything I've read on Gritz sure confirms that!

Amen to that. When I met Mavis 2 years ago at the Americana Conference, she was a sheer angel. And when she hit the stage to perform a version of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." solo with Will Kimbrough on guitar,it was better than church. I have heard both Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett sing her praises as one of their favorites and I myself have been in love with her sweet spirit since I was in grade school. listening to "I'll Take You There" on the AM radio.

Look I saw these guys during the Steel Town Tour . Hughie, Medlock , and Rossington. Blew the roof off. However they should use the talent in the band and let the old Skynyrd rest. They could make a name with who they are now. I like Van Zants CDs. Its sad though Southern Rock Ledgends are fading away. Who will take there place. Copperhead

Hey PB, The Rams and St Louis are a part of our Footprint. We love the city and its fans. The Rams are in trouble, and they shouldn't be. St Louis is a great town for sports. The team and the NFL needs to find a way to get Stan Kroenke as the sole owner. That would solve the problem with the St Louis market. He will commit the team to the town in a way that the late Mrs Frontiere did not. PS - I think Mizzou-native Gregg Williams would be a good choice if Linehan flames out again.

I have always liked the Crows since I first heard "She Talks to Angels". I rushed out and bought their first 2 CD's "Shake Your Moneymaker" & "The Southern Music & Harmony Companion".... and have enjoyed them ever since. I have had the pleasure of meeting Gig and the boys on a couple of occasions. What a great bunch of down to earth guys!!!! We went to see them in a club in Greenville, NC opening for Nantucket. They took me and the Ms on the tour bus and gave us the nickel tour, then we sat and talked Southern Rock for about an hour till it was show time. Unfortunately Marty no longer plays lead guitar for them. They just parted ways. I learned this the last time we met them. On the bus we met Keith, the new lead guitarist. Unfortunately we couldn't stick around for the show that night, but Keith was sitting there pickin' on his six string as we were talking about the Allmans and he broke out into "Liz Reed". I think he can handle the job. And Scooby, Dave, Michael, and lest we forget the front man Gig, all these guys are excellent muscians and just all around good guys!!!! I can't wait till they come back around here again!!!! "A Little Pill Called The Truth." is the song to beat!!!! rebyll

It breaks my heart every time we go down to the creek. My daughter is 2 years old, and to her, water is something to play with, not something to be afraid of. The most natural thing in the world for a child is to dip her hands into the wetness and bring it to her mouth. How can I explain that the water, which is supposed to bring life, is more than likely dangerous to life. To a day when children (and adults) drink from streams once again.....

But Keith (the new guitarist) impressed me on the bus in Greenville N.C. when, while talking and strumming his acoustic guitar, he broke into "Liz Reed" during a conversation about "The Allman Brothers"!!! We weren't able to stay for the show but I am looking forward to seeing Keith play. Dave, Michael, and "Scooby" are also salt of the earth folks and excellent muscians.
