Ghost Riders Form Their Own All-Star Touring Band

The past few years have brought about an onslaught of “All Star” Southern Rock Bands, beginning with The Southern Rock Allstars (who actually began years ago as The Dixie Allstars). And you know what they say about a good idea. Before you could say “Hell yeah!” There were half a dozen more “All Star” bands, from The Renegades of Southern Rock to Deep South to The Rhythm Pigs featuring Dave Hlubek to bands like Saturday Night Special, which featured four original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Truth be told, I was having a hard time keeping score for a while there. Lineups changed monthly, names changed – but I just chalked it all up to the nature of the beast.

Now, one of my favorite Southern rock bands, the Ghost Riders, are approaching the whole “All Star” thing from a different angle. The core band, The Ghost Riders is led by former Outlaws guitarist Steve “Grits” Grisham, along with Phil Stokes on bass (Pure Prairie League), Pug Baker on drums, Barry Rapp (Henry Paul Band) on keys and Charlie Allen on guitar.

For their “Ghost Riders Legends” Tour, the boys have added George McCorkle of the original Marshall Tucker Band, Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts Band, Gov’t Mule), Bob Burns, a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

The Ghost Riders’ single, “Girls Raised in the South,” has been receiving airplay on over 2,000 radio stations across the USA.
