I was talking to one of my pals down Florida way the other day when the conversation shifted to great Southern Rock songs. We started reliving the first time we heard this song or that song, and how much particular songs meant to us.
Pretty soon my buddy asked me a pointed question. “Hey Buffalo, you are supposed to be an authority on Southern Rock. What are your own personal top Southern Rock songs of all time?”
I had to stop in my tracks and think for a minute. Best songs of all time? Wow. That’s a tall order. I’d have to have a beer before tackling that one.
Of course the most popular Southern Rock tune of all time is probably “Free Bird,” and I am sure “Can’t You See” is at the top of the list, and “Midnight Rider.” But my pal didn’t ask for the Top 20 of all time according to public opinion. Nor did he ask for the Best Southern Rock songs of all time as voted on by Rolling Stone or The Recording Academy, He wanted my personal favorites. This could be fun, I thought, popping the top on an ice cold Silver Bullet.
See, I love “Free Bird,” obviously. And “Can’t You See,” are you kidding me? I have either listened to or performed that song more than any other song in my whole life. But a list of my personal favorites would have to deviate from the usual list. It would not likely include many of the Southern Rock songs you find on these never ending compilation CD’s.
So I got to thinking. I could never name just one song as my all time number one. Not even one song as my all time number ten. So I put together this little list, They are not listed in any particular order, they are just my favorite Southern Rock songs. At least today. Ask me again tomorrow. I love my Southern Rock.
