Tonight I thought I'd include a small excerpt from Volume 1 of interviews with Stanley Booth. This interview series allows Booth to tell stories about all the luminaries he actually knew such as Gram Parsons, Otis Redding, Jim Dickinson, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Furry Lewis, The Rolling Stones, Jerry Wexler and a long list of others.
In Volume 1 of this series Booth will discuss the great Otis Redding. In this excerpt, Booth describes first meeting Redding. This excerpt is only a small portion of the hour-long Booth interview regarding the great Otis Redding. The interview should be up in its entirety by early next week.
Stanley Booth: ...Yeah, I had a little history by the time I met Otis. I had some clue to what I was doing. I read this interview with Booker T where he said the first time he saw Otis he came out of this limo-opened the trunk and started carrying in drum cases, instrument cases and all this equipment...Otis was the roadie...
James Calemine: Steve Cropper told me that story...
SB: Well, that was the story. Of course, when I saw Otis he got out of a white limo, and he was not a roadie--he was Otis Fucking Redding. The Big O. I was wiped away. It wasn't because of his status in show business. Hell, I never even heard of Otis Redding...
JC: What year would have that been?
SB: December, 1967. December the 7th I want to say. Pearl Harbor Day. The next day I met Jerry Wexler. I went to the WDIA Revue, and the next day I flew to New York and learned that night Otis crashed into Lake Winona outside of Madison, Wisconsin. It was quite a shock. The Otis I met was somebody you thought would live forever and flourish--not because he was wicked, but because he was so healthy. He had a great attitude, he did no dope and there was no reason for us to have lost Otis Redding.
JC: But you were in the studio with Otis. You actually knew him.
SB: Oh, yeah. He opened the door to get out and I knew enough to know who it was--I had been talking to Al Jackson Jr. He told me something which I found absolutely brilliant. He said country music has been the music of white masses; rhythm and blues has been the music of the black masses. And he said Soul music is the music of all the masses. I just thought that was genius. People had no idea the musicians in Muscle Shoals were white....
