In Memory of Bear Sauls, Eric Quincy Tate

Our old friend Wayne "Bear" Sauls, guitarist for Eric Quincy Tate, passed away at 12:04 am, November 26, 2008 due to existing health complications. Bear was 60.

Bear was a consummate musician from the time he first picked up an instrument in the early sixties all the way up until his death.

Throughout the years, Bear shared the stage with all the greats, from The Allman Brothers Band to Charlie Daniels, Warren Haynes, The Nighthawks, and David Allan Coe, just to name a few. He could hang with anyone.

He joined the Eric Quincy Tate band as lead guitarist in 1973 and recorded for Capricorn, Atlantic and several other labels. During the eighties, he played lead guitar for outlaw country icon David Allan Coe. Bear traveled internationally with Coe's band until the late eighties when he formed the "Bear Facts Band."

In 2001, Wayne, along with bassist Kirk Plunkett and drummer/vocalist Stevie Hawkins, recorded Wayne's last studio CD in Macon, GA at Paul Hornsby's Muscadine Studio. Then in 2005, Wayne appeared on the Georgia Jam CD with Stevie Hawkins. In 2006, Eric Quincy Tate reunited for what would be their last reunion with Wayne.

Back in 2001 I had the opportunity of getting to know Bear a bit during a series of phone calls. We talked about doing a GRITZ interview, but it just never happened. Instead, we sat on the phone talking about Southern music, Macon, Capricorn, and the fact that EQT was overshadowed by the success of The Allman Brothers Band. We were both in agreement that Eric Quincy Tate should have enjoyed success equal to that of The Brothers. They were just that good.

Bear was a hell of a man and a great talent. He leaves behind some mighty excellent music to be remembered by, including that Hornsby produced CD, Emotional. Here’s my review of that release.

Wayne "Bear" Sauls, best known as guitarist for the unsung heroes of Southern Rock, Eric Quincy Tate, is an awesome force in the world of blues-rock. His powerful and heartfelt vocals coupled with some good ol' blues guitar make for a highly listenable album of twelve tunes that run the gamut from the blues standard "Big Legged Woman" to a killer pop song "It's Up to You." It is a compilation of some of Bear's very best tunes, with Steven Hawkins on drums, Kirk Plunkett on bass and Southern Rock guru Paul Hornsby at the B-3 (who also produced the album). Many of Bear's old EQT bandmates put in appearances, helping to make this one required listening for the connoisseur of blues or Southern Rock.

Bear was great. We’ll never forget you brother. See you in the light.
