Another Brave Man Is Dead And Gone
With great sadness, it is difficult to write Jim Dickinson died today. Dickinson played with everyone from Bob Dylan to the Stones to Aretha Franklin. When I heard the news, I called his best friend Stanley Booth. They were old Memphis running mates. How do you tell a man his best friend just died? Stanley hadn't heard. Our condolences go out to Mary Lindsay Dickinson, Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson. He died in his sleep this morning after heart problems.
My last conversation with Jim was in May, and it's a kick in the teeth to know he'll never play piano again. There will be more Jim Dickinson coverage, but for now I'm going to play Dickinson's first solo album and distill the significance of his passing. The flag flies at half mast...
