One Day at The Eye Doctor

At ten minutes past nine this morning my eye doctor turned to his nurse and said, “Well, the world didn’t end.” It took me a minute to understand his statement. It was nine minutes past nine o’clock on 9-9-09. He had heard somewhere that the world was going to end at 9:09 am. I said, “No. That’s 2012. We still have three years.” He smiled.

This morning was my first visit to my new eye doctor. I had been seeing another one who, as it turned out, didn’t know retinopathy from myopia, or from Shinola, as a matter of fact. The new doc did a series of tests, x-rays and pictures of my eyeballs, and concluded that the former doctor had in fact done laser treatments that were a waste of time and money. Well, I had already heard horror stories, but his bedside manner cinched the deal for me. What a jerk.

My new doctor is the bomb. He was kind, and gentle in putting the needle into the top of my right hand to send dye to my orbs to see where the problem was.

Turns out my left eye is okay, but my right one is pretty bad. But we knew that, me and old doc what’s his name, back in January. So my new doctor says I need a shot of Avastin in the eye. That’s right, a week from Monday I get a needle stuck in my eye. Sounds like fun, no?

It’s all because my right eye is staying swollen. Refractory macular edma is the medical name. The doc says that with this shot, I could regain my vision. It has been really bad lately, especially the past couple of months. I have been going through various strength reading glasses just to do my writing, and everyday work. Not to mention the bizarre “floaters” and other visionary delights. When it gets this bad, you are more than ready to stick a needle in your eye.

After the doctor I sat in my old Honda war horse for an hour waiting for the dilating drops to wear off. Later on, I dropped by Horizon Records just to see Gene’s big Beatles display. He had completely sold out of both the stereo and mono Beatles boxed sets, but was giving away cool things like Beatles t-shirts and lithographs while they lasted with any Beatles purchase. I stopped and looked at a really neat Beatles poster and thought about the first time I ever heard those guys ont The Ed Sullivan Show 46 years ago when I was just a lad in first grade. Talk about staying power.

As I left the store to drive home I flipped on the radio for Rock 101’s all day Beatles marathon just in time to hear my all time favorite Fab Four tune, “Here comes the sun, Here comes the sun, and I say it’s alright.” Yes it is. And I am more than happy to be able to see it.
