Swampland Remembers and Salutes Nashville Songwriter Dennis Linde

On February 9 a very special event was held in Nashville to honor the late songwriter and all around creative artist, Dennis Linde, who died on December 22, 2006.

The show was a benefit the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis (CPF), the deadly lung disease that took Dennis’ life. The disease currently afflicts 128,000 Americans and has no known cause, no FDA-approved treatment and no cure.

The event, "A Night of Burnin' Love" was a beautiful tribute to the famed songwriter who penned “Burning Love” for Elvis Presley.

Linde’s daughter Lisa and her husband, the Hollywood actor, James Marsden (X-Men, 27 Dresses), hosted the event.

Guests included Rascal Flatts, Montgomery Gentry and Mark Chestnut, who covered the hits of Linde. According to all reports, a great time was had by all, and the turn out was excellent. There was also a silent auction,

James Marsden performed two songs, and Montgomery Gentry rocked the house, as well as fellow country music stars Joe Nichols, Mark Chesnutt, Eddy Raven, rock artist Ben Lee and others.

Dennis was not only a prolific songwriter, but a man of great imagination and creativity. He actually designed his own fictional town, along with a host of fictional characters that lived there. The characters appear throughout his songs. His character, Earl, the wife beater, is front and center in songs such as “Queen of My Double-Wide,” recorded by Sammy Kershaw, and “Goodbye Earl,”by The Dixie Chicks, in which Earl pays for his domestic abuse.

With a list of influences that included writers J.D. Salinger, Mark Twain, William Faulkner and John Steinbeck, along with composers such as George Gershwin and Cole Porter and the old time rock'n'rollers like Little Richard, Linde developed his unique, one of a kind style that would lead him to write colorful hits such as "Bubba Shot the Jukebox" and "It Sure is Monday" for the country singer Mark Chesnutt.

Some of Linde's other songs include songs by Roger Miller ("Tom Green County Fair", 1970), Don Williams ("Walkin' a Broken Heart", 1985, co-written with Alan Rush; "Then It's Love", 1987), Garth Brooks ("Callin' Baton Rouge", 1993), and Alan Jackson ("The Talkin' Song Repair Blues", 2005).

Still, it was "Burning Love" - written and originally demoed by Dennis Linde - that was his crowning jewel. It became a mainstay of Elvis’ live set in the Aloha from Hawaii period.

The song was first released, along with three other Linde compositions, by Arthur Alexander on his eponymous Warner Brothers release in late 1971. Alexander and Linde had both become staff writers at Combine Music,writing alongside people like Kris Kristofferson, Billy Swan and Wanda Jackson, all of whom wrote for the Nashville-based publishing company.

“Burning Love” made the Top Ten on both sides of the Atlantic and narrowly missed the number one spot in the United States in October 1972.

Linde tended to shy away from the spotlight, but it is quite obvious that no one deserved the attention more than him. Swampland first learned of the songwriter’s true legacy when James Calemine (Mystery & Manners) interviewed Linde’s friend, fellow songwriter and Administrative Director of The University of Georgia Music Business Certificate Program, Bruce Burch.

Today we tip our collective hat to honor the memory of Dennis Linde, a true artist, a Nashville legend, and a true inspiration to creative writers the world over.
